rapid Seroquel increase

Posted by recoveringlife on December 9, 2006, at 22:50:26

Hi everyone,

A couple of you might remember my post about Abilify ... I had to abandon it b/c of severe akathesia (restlessness in my legs).

SO, after two weeks of alternating severe depression and hypomania, we are upping my Seroquel. QUICKLY.

I am currently on 200mg ... we are increasing by 100mg tonight and another 100mg tomorrow night, bring me to 400mg by Monday.

Has anyone ever done this? How bad was the sedation?

THANK YOU!

Thanks for your response Phillipa ... I feel OK on the 200mg but have felt drowsy/sedated when we've increased by as small as 25 or 50mg ... so this is double that ... hence my nervousness

hi recoveringlife
I went from 25mg to 300 mg over 10 days.

I felt sedated during those 10 days, and for the first 2 weeks or so once I reached the 300mg dose.

During this time I was drinking a lot of coffee (bad for my anxiety) and I had provigil 200mg to help me get up. I'd set my alarm, take the provigil in an intoxicated stupor and set my 2nd alarm for an hour earlier. It was okay by then.

good luck. seroquel has made a huge difference in my anxiety and my suicidal ideation and intrusive thoughts/flashbacks.

best to you. try to stick it out, even though you might feel groggy for a week, you will probably feel better in other ways.

-Ll

Ive gone from 25mg to 400mg overnight when I was really stressed out about something. I think you can go up to 500, and then the docs want to discuss with you. If this is something temporary, then I'd go for it. For permanent increase, you need to consult with your pdoc.

My pdoc claims the sedation of Seroquel reaches a plateau at around 200mg and further dose increments do little to increase drowsiness. Not sure if that bears out in actual practice though. People do develop tolerance to the sedation over time.

The most I've ever taken is 150mg and could hardly move because I felt so heavy!

I stopped @ 100mgs...I had terrible nightmares and was over-sedated. I think you should ask about Provigil or possibly another stimulant (depending on your situation) being added...both Provigil and Ritalin have been used in patients stable on clozapine (seroquel is quite similar to clozapine), so maybe those are both options.

Good luck.

I went from 25 mg to 600 mg in one shot WHILE in the hospital. I was having a psychotic reaction to Wellbutrin. I had to stay at 600 mg for a few days then I came off it. I don't remember much because that much Sequel put me into a walking coma!

Take care.

Interestingly, a psychotic reaction to wellbutrin? I have never heard of that. I knew of seizures being caused by wellbutrin but not psychoses.

How long had you been on it and at what dosage?

It was the second time too! Actually I have since heard of a couple of people who had the same reaction.

I can't remember the dosage but it couldn't have been much because I had just started it. The first it happened I was able to stop the med and the psychosis went away.

When thw 2nd pdoc insisted that I try it again a few years later ( why did I comply?), the psychosis was much worse than the first time and I had to go into the hospital. The only other med I was on was Klonopin (both times).

I thought I was the only one until a couple of people on an eating disorder group I am on had the same thing happen.

I won't be going for the third!

That's frightening...I guess I'm lucky in that I haven't had those kind of serious reactions but I'm such a chicken with meds I usually insist on tiny doses before I feel able to tolerate an increase. The SE's that I have had were severe Headaches with Jaw clenching and other times a worsening of my depression to suicidal levels.

I've never had Serotonin Syndrome, Tardive Dyskinesia or the other horrid, life threatening SE's so I should consider myself luckier than others, but I am very med phobic. But I feel that this has allowed me to tolerate many meds longer than I might have been able to if I started at higher doses. I only stop a med when the SE's become unbearable, then the depression seems preferable to physical distress.

Wellbutrin is know to cause auditory hallucinations as a not common SE.

Anything it seems to me that hits dopamine, or acts to increase its activity etc, like parkinson drugs, are known to cause hallucinations SE's.

Depression isn't a taboo anymore. Psychosis sure as heck is.
