Any NEW OCD drugs in the pipeline

Posted by dg44 on November 30, 2006, at 22:22:39

From what I hear the SSRI drug age is coming to a close due the the sexual side effects and most companies are not targeting OCD exclusively but rather depression with the new SSRNI drug lineup.

I dont see any new drugs for OCD in the next couple of years .. have you heard anything.

Of course drugs that treat depression usually work good for OCD but not always.

There are research studies going on with OCD, listed at the OC Foundation:

http://www.ocfoundation.org/research-participants-sought.html

The OC Foundation is a good place to start for OC resources.

I had one of the worst OCD episodes in terms of YBOCS scales in high school so I know what it is like to suffer silently. I am a ficticious anonymous "combination character" in a book I will not name but is a collection of OCD stories. Eventually I was hospitalized and was in a day treatment program. I didnt really start medication until I was "partially well" actually.

Side effects are always a tradeoff. It is unfortunate that most SSRIs will give some degree of sexual side effects. I hear doctors are augmenting with a slight bit of Wellbutrin among other things. I know when I was on Wellbutrin for depression I was horny as hell so there is some truth to this I'm sure.

Best wishes

Any NEW drugs in the pipeline Period?

There don't seem to be many promising drugs coming out full stop for psych disorders in the near future!

I would have thought Opiates would work well for OCD, although obviesly there are risks!
Have you ever tried them?

They just brought out an extended release version of Tramadol.

Wish I had more to offer

Definately risks... but I think we discussed that its unlikely that that many schedule II drugs are going to be brought out for depression without some guidelines.

Schizophrenia: Bifeprunox, possibly, 2008
Iloperidone, Phase III
Paliperidone, possibly 2007-8

Depression: Desvenlafaxine, possibly 2007
Vilazodone, relicensed, Phase III

Wish there were more out there too -- there are new ideas on the horizon but things like NK1 receptor agents and other drugs are a ways away at this point.

Paliperidone I believe is a continuous delivery metabolite of Risperdal. Desvenlafaxine, usual patent extension probably, but maybe the metabolite will be different for some people.

I wasn't really thinking of Desvenlafaxine as a new drug.
I't sound just like another synical marketing ploy by Wythe!

Hopefully I'm wrong
Its just that Effexor did nothing for me even at 225mg per day, so I doubt Desvenlafaxine will do much either.

Agomelatine sounds good, but were not going to get it in the EU-Thanks to our stupid Eurocrats
People complain about the FDA, they could be worse :)

Interesting about the possibles for 2008 though

It is frustrating though because theres so many potentially helpful compounds out there, such as Kappa-Antagonists & GABA-B Agonists to name a few.

Sorry if that was a bit of a poorly spelled rant
I'm really tired!

Interesting source of information
