ativan: equivalencies and duration of action

Posted by saturn on November 18, 2006, at 5:04:24

Hi 8)

Is it correct that .5 mg ativan=.25 xanax=5 mg valium(approximately)? (And might this be on the order of about 5 mg of Ambien>---I realize that's comparing apples and oranges but ambien is my best personal frame of reference).

And might anyone please inform me what the duration of action of ativan is (I realize it's inbetween xanax and klonopin with a half life of about 10--20 hours but I never know how this translates into the duration of clinical effect)?

Lastly, if I find the ativan works well after a test run should I take any the day/night before to let it begin to build in my system as I'll need it to be working from the early a.m. untill about 5 pm. Any dosing suggestions would be greatly appreciated (minding I only have thirty .5 mgs of ativan). My lunesta will get me to sleep the night before.

THE REST OF THIS POST IS JUST KINDA FYI SO FEEL FREE TO SKIP IF UNINTERESTED

(FYI I recently had my doc switch me from xanax to ativan for upcoming interviews which will last all day. I only use them prn for these occassions, as well as 25 mg atenolol. .25 xanax did nothing and .5 made me feel kinda depressed with some but incomplete resolution of anxiety, though I could still generally think ok. It wore off too fast also.)

(I hope the ativan is better in these regards. I would've asked for klonopin but I've read several posts that it *may* be more sedating than ativan--though everyone I realize responds uniquely-- and I like the idea of an intermediate half-life.)

Peace...Saturn

There is a chart on this web site that shows equivalent doses and duration of different Bz. Go to the home page and scroll about 1/4 to 1/3 down and you will see it Good Luck

I don't know if this will help, but for real gut wrenching trembling anxiety I found ativan just "gets it" and I feel normal. Both Valium and Klonipin just made me feel slowed down, depressed, (Klonopin moreso than Valium) but I'd still get the hardcore anxiety.

I did find valium excellent for Ativan withdrawal, however I seem to always end up back on Ativan for one reason or another
Xanax even though it's supposed to be the best for anxiety, did nothing for me.

For me, the duration of action for Ativan seems to vary daily, I suppose it depends on me more than the ativan.

You know I took ativan for a while and liked it a lot . It lasts longer than xanax but my dose was high. 4-6mg if my memory is correct. That's a lot. Love Phillipa
