Amen Clinic

Posted by Kathryn Goodenough on November 18, 2006, at 23:45:30

I have an 18 yr old son with possibly ADHD. He appears to be self medicating with drugs. Has anyone been to the Amen Clinic and if so was it helpful?

I think that clinic was discussed here several years ago. I don't think it was positive for the most part.
Sorry I can't give more feedback.

Good luck

Kathryn, here are links to 2 threads about the Amen Clinic. I don't know if they'll be helpful to you, but it's a start:

One thing I notice about people who report going to the Amen clinics is that they have a long intake process and take extensive histories. People report, for the most part, they really like the pdoc the Amen Clinic assigns to them and feel they are knowledgeable and have plenty of time to really listen to the patient.

SPECT scanning at best provides a supportive tool to arrive at a diagnosis. From the Amen site:
"A SPECT scan shows the underlying cerebral blood flow and consequently metabolic activity patterns of the brain". Only blood flow is measured, the ability to measure neurotransmitter activity and levels is very experimental with SPECT and is at least a decade from finding any clinical use.

To me it seems the value in Amen Clinics is that they have excellent pdocs and are not being restrained by insurance limits on time spent with patients. Docs with extensive clinical experience and ample time to spend with each patient will stand a better chance of finding an effective treatment.

For a several hundred dollars you can get a consult with a top psychopharmacologist; I think this is key and not a SPECT scan. Otherwise you
will pay several thousand dollars.
