GAD ANNOYING THOUGHTS,WOT WORKS HELP :(

Posted by tallclaire1982 on November 11, 2006, at 13:48:33

Hey all!
i have been having anxiety feelings for a few months due to the fact i may have MS, although the anxiety bothers me more than the fact i may have MS.
Weird i get these racing thoughts they are usually sexual ones and make no sense to me, anybody i see i think about a stupid sexual thought and the more i worry and i wonder why the more my mind wants to annoy me and make me sound like a pervert LOL!! im no pervert i even have a low sex drive i think, i just remember thinkin of a stupid sexual thought one day and then worrying about why i was thinkin it and it seemed to carry on and annoy me! as its plain weird!! I know anxiety makes people think strange things but i hate it and want my mind back!!!
I was anxious before i had this obbsessive thoughts so i suppose my mind was at an all time low anyway to begin with! like having a cold u r susceptable to anything when ur body is down!
any help/personal experiences would be fab
xx

I don't think anything helps with that, certainly not any drug I can think of. You are just another human with a normal crazy mind who thinks about sex all the time. It's completely normal, IMO, and best left well alone. I'm not suggesting for a moment that you do things you feel are perverted, but there must be a relationship between our thoughts and our actions, don't you think? Is it possible that at least some part of you just wants a bit of/more sex?

Claire, What's the figure that's always quoted about the frequency with which men think about sex? Is it something like every 7 seconds? (I forget) And some of the things that go through our minds!! Don't you think that our culture kind of encourages wilfulness rather than acceptance of ourselves? That we can do it all as an effort of will. Perhaps modern society has become topheavy with this.

Not to change the subject but I guess the MS was confirmed by MRI. I'm sorry. Could you be looking ahead at what you may have lost? Not trying to be mean. Just a thought. Love Phillipa

OCD, in its different forms responds quite well to SSRIs and CBT. The primary difference between obsessive thoughts and non-obsessive thoughts is the affective (negative) component attached to them. Sexual preoccupations are extremely common. While you have received reassurance that these are normal thoughts (which they are) if you have been cognitively associated with anxiety reassurance will not work. Benzo's (particularly clonazepam) can be helpful during initial tx to minimize the disruptive anxiety. Remember, OCD usually responds to SSRIs at the highest optimal dosing. Good Luck. This is entirely manageable.

OCD not the handwashing but the ruminating thoughts responds to the highest prescribed does of SSRI's is that correct? Thanks Phillipa

Phillipa, the higher doses are usually appropriate for all forms of OCD--not just pure (thoughts only)OCD. Take Care

I was referring to the loss of physical health if you have MS? Didn't you say that you might have MS? If not that will be wonderful. Love Phillipa

I would firmly ditch my 70s superego, or most of it.

Getting older I've become hugely more comfortable with myself....in fact, now that I think of it, I have done what they said about finding myself. They wouldn't have been too impressed with the result perhaps, but one of the advantages of getting older is you no longer care.

Is that what you meant, PJ? (Maybe not?)

Hey tallclaire,

I have had awful panic disoder which has abated to a kind of low grade GAD. I have learned to deal with it really well by using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I found it literally terrifying that I could not control my thoughts (ironically my thoughts were obsessed with having MS!)
Here is a link to a free online program that teaches CBT skills. It is run by an Australian University. Takes a bit of practice but works very well.
