I think it should be called Nervous System disorder or something like that.
People who haven't truly suffered with it just don't get it and they think you have to be depressed "because of something" at least if it was given another name with a more neurological meaning it might hold some credence with the rest of the world.

Well, interestingly, the latest research indicates that feeling down is just a symptom of depression, not the syndrome itself. Depression, it's looking more and more like, is a metabolic disorder - a generalized dysfunction of nearly every cell in the body.
If it's true, that would be why, for example, people who are depressed die of heart attacks more frequently than the non-depressed.

Maybe Neurological dysregulation?
Seems to me like homeostasis in a bunch of my systems (or manifestations of a few neurological or physiological systems?) has always been a bit off, sometimes a lot off. Mood, energy, attitude, motivation, libido, agitation, irritability/temper, self-control, cognition, focus, etc. etc. And not in lock step with each other. "Depression" alone definitely doesn't describe it accurately.

is 'melancholia' - after the Greek humor theory;
but now that we are in the decade of the brain,
maybe somehting like Neuron Disorder would be better, just as an example. It might do far more for the stigma of mental illness than any ribbon or public education effort. I think it's also more accurate to describe a brain disorder than its symptoms. Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder with motor jerk manifestations, but we don't call it "the shakes syndrome".Squiggles

Well I guess it could be because people who are depressed smoke more (I know I do especially when depressed) or gorge on unhealthy foods and just take less care of their health. But then again maybe there is another reason related to the actual depression (or should I say malfunctioning brain disorder.

and don't forget apathy, fear, morbidness etc etc, it's like every negative emotion you've ever had rolled into one.
Somebody ~(a really nice person) asked me a few weeks ago what Depression was actually like (the first time anyone has ever bothered to ask me that) and I thought God how I wish I could be the one asking that question. I didn't really tell the person because when you tell it like it is it sounds so melodramatic.
I got really annoyed the other day though because my friend who is an alcoholic took me round to a friends flat (also an alcoholic) I never judge them because of their alcohol addiction because I know it's an addiction and this person was sitting slumped in the settee a bit spaced out with an empty wine bottle in front of her and had the audacity to tell ME that I needed to pull MYSELF together! I just sort of bit my tongue and politely said "it's not that simple. Somebody else (who deals in drugs, makes a living by selling them and takes them himself every day) told a friend of mine that I needed to take up a hobby like Fishing or something! It really annoys me.

I suffer from CFITHS or MFUD . Take a soupcon or two of depression add a whole bunch of other c**p and serve on bed of flame grilled dysphoria.

"You need to look at things more positively"; "maybe a nice walk around the block would make you feel so much better"; "I know what you mean; I had a pet goldfish once and he got sick and I was so depressed..."
It's a good thing I'm not a wizard: I'd inflict one month of truly Black Depression on anyone that uttered such words. It would be "for their own good". :>} After all, it would educate them. I wonder if they'd thank me?:>}

I prefer the name 'depressive illness'. I don't like 'major depressive disorder' too much because it makes me think of the DSM and insurance.
