Zoloft start up effects?

Posted by Racer on October 29, 2006, at 18:33:41

I started Zoloft this week, with the start up pack, so I'm still at 25mg. So far, I've not been feeling at all well. I guess it could be described as "mild flu-like symptoms:" I've had a general malaise, some sleeplessness, headaches, and nausea. It's hard for me to vomit, but this time I'm coming very close. Today, I've been having those chills that sometimes wash over you when you're about to be sick, and I very nearly was sick. (I'm taking a quick break to ask this -- otherwise, I'm lying on the sofa with a bucket next to it. I know, TMI)

I've been assuming that this is Zoloft start up. It just occurred to me, though, that it might not be. Could I be coming down with something? Or is this likely just start up miseries?

Oh, well. Either way, it'll likely be gone in a week, so I guess I'll stick it out and see how it goes... Rotten bad timing, though. I've got homework I'm not doing, which needs to be done.

Hi,
I've taken Zoloft twice, 25mg. I think the only symptoms I had were feeling kind of spaced out and not really hungry for a few days, also some headaches and weird dreams for a little while. Everyone reacts differently though, so your symptoms could be from the Zoloft. Then again, it could easily be a virus. I'm sorry that's probably not a whole lot of help for you. If it lasts much longer, or if you actually started vomiting or feeling worse, I would contact your doctor to see what he/she thinks. Good luck

Didn't know they had a starter pack for it. Good idea though. Gee I hope it's not a virus. What an awful thing when starting a new med. Hang in there Racer. Love Phillipa

I've taken Zoloft on three occasions always starting immediately at 50 mg per day. The first two times it caused absolutely no startup side-effects, while the third time it made me feel slighly "weird" for a few days.

Likewise citalopram caused no ill effects whatsoever.

Effexor on the other hand I absolutely could not tolerate. I had insomnia, I felt over-stimulated and I felt de-realized, and soon quit.

Wellbutrin caused no ill effects at startup either.

Fluphentixol gave me a mild headache for a few days.

And that's about it, the story of the "medicated me".

Currently I am med-free and doing well on omega-3.

Well, good luck.

I lost weight on Zoloft because of queasiness and nausea, never actually got sick though. Try eating saltines and sipping gingerale until you know what is happening. Hope you feel better soon.

...so sorry. Zoloft suppressed my appetite (I lost 25 lbs.) but never really made me feel that ill. I hope you feel better soon.

While I've never tried Zoloft, every other SSRI I've tried causes those symptoms (Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Effexor, Cymbalta). With me, the side effects never went away, but for many they do after a week or so.

For my daughter, Zoloft is far better than Celexa or Lexapro for her social anxiety symptoms. Lexapro caused way too many memory issues, despite the pdoc telling me it doesn't cause memory issues. Her start up flu-like symptoms went away after a week.

Good luck.
