topamax neuropharmacology

i was wondering if anyone knew all the details of topamax neuropharmacology and if there is a page that gives a good run through without being too difficult to understand.

what i know of it is:

-it does SOMETHING at AMPA receptors
-has some possible effect on glutamate release, or antagonizes?
-blocks calcium receptors?
-has this one strange mechanism that is supposed to be how people lose weight and attenuate appetite on it?

i'd really like to know the specifics. it seems to have cognitive dulling effects but paradoxically cognitive enhancing effects in some, seems to do with temporal lobe function?

A friend of mine is bipolar, most of the time manic. She swears by her regimen of Seroquel h.s. and Topamax during day. Apparently it is the only combo that doesn't cause excessive weight gain. I know another bipolar person I'd like to suggest this to, but that person is w/ 'the system' and Topamax is not on the formulary. Why ... I don't know. Too expensive maybe. I know I could get it for my back pain. I'm sorry I'm not educated in its pharmacology, but just thought I'd share what I know.

bestwishes, cf

you may find help here - a site called www.crazymeds.org has a lot of commonsense info on Topamax and other psych meds we've all taken or are likely to take at some point in time.

I've found the information there to be clear & easy to understand, and it generally includes what your doctor might not tell you.

Best wishes, A.
