i wish lunesta, ambien etc were like remeronsoltab

Posted by saturn on October 2, 2006, at 17:16:46

s because I have to take them on a completely empty stomach in order for them to work...which means not eating at *least* 3 hours before bed, and going to bed hungry.

I wish they came in sublingual form or like the Remeron Soltabs.

You may just have terrible insomnia. I haven't particularly noticed a difference in empty or full stomach, although I can see a slight logic in that. Lunesta 3mg was not strong enough for me, and Ambien 10mg isn't either, I take 20 -- you may need more depending if you're taking benzodiazepines also and other factors. There's no particular directive in the PI about empty stomach. But going to bed on a full stomach isn't necessarily the best thing either -- your body temperature rises slightly, certain parts of your system are activated by food. Three hours of no food before bed, while dessert is tempting, isn't particularly abnormal if you think about it. If you go to bed at 1030 and eat at 7, thats about 3 hours.

I've noticed the same thing. If I eat very close to bedtime, I have a harder time falling asleep with ambien. My mother has the same trouble. I think I read something about food affecting absorption, but I don't have any references.

I tend to eat a light snack before bedtime, because it helps keep my blood sugar up overnight. Otherwise, I sometimes wake up feeling low. And then because I take syntrhoid, I can't eat right away in the a.m., so I don't like to give up my snack.

Have you tried Rozerem/ramelteon? I think I have a sample of it, but I couldn't take it at the time since I was also on an antibiotic which was contraindicated. If I can find it, maybe I'll give it a try and report back.

Take care,

gg

Yes it's true, i've found some ways around this problem. If you need to eat, make sure you take your pills *before* you eat, they are absorbed more rapidly then. Do not eat yoghurt or sour milk, it will take hours before you notice any effect. Try to eat just bread and don't drink too much.
This is based on years of experience and it works for me.

(dope slaps myself)....Duh! Why didn't I think of that? Eating AFTER? Sheesh, I feel like a real dope.

Good idea, thanks. And for the tip about dairy. :)

By the time I get myself out of bed and going, have a cup of tea and kiss my husband goodbye, it's time to eat breakfast.

GG I get out of bed, bathroom, splash water on my face, throw some shorts on, take synthroid, take the dogs quickly out and then prepare my granola with berries and YOGURT!!!!!! So is tensor saying no yougurt? Could my anxiety be high because I eat yougurt every morning probably able 30minutes after the synthroid. Why would the doc say you test fine keep doing what you're doing. What if I really need less thryroid? See I panic at everything. Love Jan

I've noticed that with yoghurt and other thick food products, the absorption rate is much lower. With most meds this doesn't matter(rather the opposite!), but with ambien and other hypnotics you want a fast and a full response to make you fall asleep.
