L-tryptophan available by prescription in Canada.

Posted by linkadge on September 3, 2006, at 20:24:24

What's up with that? They take it off the market, and all the officials agree that it doesn't work, and that the only way to increase brain serotonin is to take an uptake inhibitor, and now its back on the market. I don't understand.

Seriously when I was young your age I tried L-triptophan and felt like I didn't have the energy to breath. I was using it to sleep. Before the other meds. What was that all about? Love Phillipa

~~~ I did. It was recommended for jet lag for me a few years ago to "right" a sleep pattern. Also, isn't it the reason eating turkey is reported to make you sleepy and yawny after eating alot of it?
I also think it was the supplement in the US that was pulled due to a contaminated batch linked to Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome - that was back around 1998. It's slowly returned here.
Link im sure you knew why it was banned,that has been talked about on various sites groups etc for the past decade,especialy by conspiracists who believe it was odd it was taken off the market at the same time ssris or rather prozac was due to introduce itself to the U.S
As far as its effects im wondering if phillipa isnt talking about 5 htp which again im sure you know unlike pure trpypt instead also builds in the body,around the heart,which is why some people advise strictly aganist using 5 htp as an alternative to the amino.
As for the amino itself,although it was pulled,it wasnt ACTUALY banned,and i was allowed to be used upon getting it from other sources.
Ive used it,and unlike 5 htp,as im sure you know also trypto is one of those HARD TO REACH aminos,meaning i had to take it in high doses to ensure any of it was getting to the brain as it has poor blood brain pentatrating properties.
Also a major problem with it,is at the dose to use it requires powder as capsules cant hold 1-2 grams,why this is such a problem,well it isnt very solubable,i remeber id use apple sauce as i read in a all natural remedy book that this was a good way,and it did work.
As for the results,hmmmm not even close to the cost in my view,next to no results,in fact i found otc taurine with b6 in it to be more noticable.
I personaly if i were looking for a serontonin alternative,would consider 5 htp which i did find noticable,or st johns which i dont know enough on,but l typto right now,the prices are so high because its just comming back and people are believing they were being held out on something meanwhile they could have legaly and easly obtained it the whole decade,just not on there local retail shop shelf,it was not banned from being used,it was as stated in a post found to have a contamenated batch by the largest manf a manf based on japan i believe and quickly pulled.
Just was odd how long it took to come back.
No it wasn't 5Htp as I've never taken it. It was l tryptophane. Love Phillipa I might add it was before it was banned.
Another reason too is cost. If tryptophan works, I can get it covered by insurance. It is actually a prescription product in Canada.
I am interested in that. I've heard that 5-htp can pose problems to peripherial tissues like the heart. I thought this was a problem too with tryptophan.
Wow so its a script medication,is it on label for actual depression?
I guess im as shocked when a friend sent me kava script medication from Europe,seeing it in that form and seeing it on a store shelf here was a lil wierd.
I would have to ask also is it manf in a stable form,i used to really be into the aminos and one famous topic in the group i belonged to was how a few really had trouble getting to the brain.
Gaba as you know is almost impossable,and trypto was another weak one.
You had to make sure you avoided protein a few hours before or it would quickly bind to it and become part of the protien chain rather on its own as a single supplmented amino.
5 htp had the advantage of being able to penatrate the brain much more readly,however circulated in the body as well mainly around the heart as we mentioned,i never heard of the actual amino having the concern with it of being a danger to the heart,i mean never,perhaps in script form it takes on this possability.
I do know,as one could guess,one conern would all of them is using them in conjunction with any serotonin enhancing drug.
I remember a protocol that was popular was a small dose of prozac,actualy if im not mistaken 5 mg,used with the amino.
I would use caution regardless,but good luck if you have any data sheets or point me to one that would be cool to see.
Yeah, you can get tryptohpan from a health food store, or you can get it prescribed from the doctor. My mother got 1000mg tabs prescribed from a psychiatrist to augment her lithium. I don't know if it will work.
Well wish her luck,id go for a script too if it were a option on a otc product.
Not to come off the wrong way but i assume and just that your mother has a emotional disorder of some sort,in a way my case stumps me more because no one i know of suffers im the only one and its really quite embarrsing as i have to watch everyone progress so fast in life,kids family etc,and keep my life a secret the lying gets to be a lot sometimes since i hate liars.
I just have to give reasons to why im not in different places in my life but the point was i just wish there was genetic link somewhere.Oh well.
Again good luck with the trypto
Yeah, I do have a family history. Me, my brother (undiagnosed), uncle, aunt, mother, grandfater, and greatgrandmother (all on my mother's side). Most just had depression, but my mother has bipolar. She's been on everything and is just burnt out by it all. She tried to kill herself a few times.
Don't be put off by genetic links though. It certainly doesn't make your problems any less credable. Its got to start somewhere.
