can depression cause sexual dysfunction?

Posted by Maxime on July 9, 2006, at 21:52:59

So if a person was really depressed, would she, in this case, have any sexual dysfunction? The desire is there ... the orgasm is not. I know that people often lose interest in sex when depressed, but all things physical should remain intact. Yes? No? Please!

Yeah, uh huh, you betcha it can. It does for many of us. It does for me. Sometimes I get into feeling as though a nice big O would help me feel better, and I try -- with nothing, nada, zip, zilch, zero, bupkis, just no response at all. And you know what? That's even more depressing...

I'm sorry you're sharing that particular symptom of depression, Maxie, and hope knowing you aren't the only one who does helps.

Well, I am sorry that other people experience it. But I am glad to know I am not a freak. :-) Thanks for sharing.

Here's a good article. Not too long either. Are you taking any of these?

that is a good article. but my point is that I am NOT taking an AD and wondering if depression alone can cause sexual dysfunction.

Sex is the canary in the coal mine. It is very easily damaged by things other than drugs, though of course those too. Loneliness, hopelessness, futility etc etc and the inability to get enough deep sleep will all do that.

Yes, it most certainly can, whether you are taking an anti-depressant or not.

It can certainly casue lack of desire and interest just like other pleasures in life. Persoanlly thats as far as the dysfunction has went with me - certainly no orgasm difficulty etc but Im sure it is possible with more severely depressed individuals. Hope this answered your question.
