I talk to myself

Posted by med_empowered on June 8, 2006, at 22:40:19

not outloud..usually...but sometimes my thoughts are so intense I feel like I have to verbalize them. It happens mostly when I'm: really depressed, really happy, or really anxious.

What do I do? I feel crazed.

I don't think that's completely abnormal. I have plenty of non-MI friends who do that either as a matter of course, or when confronted with intense emotions.

I don't want to trivialize your concern, though, if it's the sheer intensity of the underlying emotions that's troubling you.

Have look at this thread:

Not sure if it is any reassurance as everyone here is "crazy", but it seems pretty common to talk to one self.

What should you do?
Do it more often. Or if that worries you too much, get a dog (you can have mine) and speak to him.
We are creatures of language, unfortunately overcolonised by market forces.
And don't worry.
Who are you comparing yourself to?

I talk to myself, I respond to my coments, and then I talk back to the responces.

I agree, it can be a way of trying to address emotions.

Talking to yourself is more "normal" than we realise, I think.

Especially if we have to spend long periods alone

I remember talking to a friend about this he said he did it a lot, now he's really succsesfull

Don't know if this proves anything significant, except that perhapse its no bad thing!

Thinking about this more, talking to myself (usually just bordering on out loud) is actually a sign of mental *wellness*. It means I'm engaged with my thoughts and emotions. And, living by myself, who else am I going to process them with but myself?

When I'm mute it usually means anxiety, depression, or an overwhelming mixed state.

Yep, I talk to myself too. Sometimes I have to ask myself questions like "I am down here in the basement because?" and then wait until I can answer myself before I know what I went down there for. Otherwise I am stuck not knowing what to do. I am not joking either. But I *do* think it is pretty funny so I try to just enjoy myself in the midst of it!

It's always 'we' with me. Even in dreams. I dreamt I was going to die in 20 minutes. Not something I looked forward to, but unsurprising. The question was 'where shall we go to do it?'. I needed a soft floor, not wanting to fall out of bed at the critical moment. So I took myself to the softest carpet in a little room with doors, to do it there.

Heh, I love talking to myself, I always get the right answer. :D I do it outloud even. I think it's good for keeping my thoughts in order.
