ADD and/or depression

Posted by lymom3 on June 2, 2006, at 13:01:41

Ok...you fellow ADDer's out there, if there are any, tell me if you think I'm a nut or if I might be on the right track. I have just quit taking yet another antidepressant...that makes 14 now that I've tried. Some have been in conjunction with a stimulant, sometimes not. I feel that many of the symptoms of depression overlap the symptoms of the ADD especially the inattentive type. I want to tell the pdoc next week that I'm not going to go on another antidepressant. I want him to work with me to find a stimulant that works and at a dosage that is good for me. If I still need help with mood swings, then look at a mood stabilizer. I'm thinking that after that many a/d's it ought to be a clue that maybe that isn't the issue?

Thoughts anyone?

Eaxctly and the opposite is true also. If I've been on 14 different antidepressants, not to mention the other bonus meds they've tried to add to the mix, without success then I'm pretty well done with a/d's for now. Get me on a stimulant that works for me at the correct dosage and then re evaluate whether I am still having problems. I've done it their way for years, it's about time I'm going to stick up for myself I believe. I'm not opposed to doing something else if a stimulant alone isn't enough, but I really want them to prove to me that a stimulant alone won't work for me.

Guess we'll see if he'll go for it next week.

Your in my field girl. I tried 6 ADs and hated every 1 of em'. i take Ritalin and with coffee and nicotine often has me in the 'zone' where alls cool.

ADs make me dumb, and depressed, funny that ha?

I think you MUST insist on an a stimulant which agrees with you:

-Ritalin-MANY forms
-Adderall-IR@SR
-Dexedrine IR@SR
-Desoxyn

and PERHAPS a MS-low dose AP, or benzo if need be.

You sound like you have been thru the bloody med 'merry go round' you have an idea what works for u?-yake power.

A stimulant+benzo, or MS can be the lest SE ridden treatment.

God knows i'v taken enouht crap~Docs advice, to know that they MAY know medicine, but DON"T KNOW ME!!!

Cheers

Hi Lyn,

What works best for my inattentive ADD is currently, and in the past year plus, is Adderall XR, Lamictal, Xanax as needed - not often, and Ambien. Just got off Zoloft with made me flip out after 3 weeks on it. Scary!

What is it that makes you want to try the ADD meds? ADD and comorbid depression often go together, so it can work well. I liked adding the Lamictal for irritability, and xanax for when I get anxious.
good luck

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've been on (clears throat). Celexa, Effexor, Effexor XR, Cymbalta, Strattera, Lexapro, Zyprexa, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Xanax, Cymbiax (spelling), and I'm sure there's others I cannot remember.

My doctor was sure I was ONLY depressed. For the longest time I told her that I couldn't concentrate, was impatient, quick to jump down someone's throat-- all of which I think would have said "Maybe he is ADD!". So finally when I was there the other day my physician's assistant wasn't there and I saw THE Physician. He gave me Strattera, and I'm praying it works... Now if I could only get over these Effexor XR withdrawals... they are the worst!

Ugh...Effexor was horrible to withdraw from. I can't argue that one with you at all. You know, it wouldn't be so bad IF you could take 2 weeks vacation time every time you had to come off of a med so you could live through the side effects without having to suffer at work...
