how long does lamictal stay in your system??

Posted by MichaelJr on May 31, 2006, at 23:27:31

Im really fing pissed at my doctor. I told him, Im really skeptical about taking another strong drug (Im already on geodon). He says, oh no lamictal is not that strong. I said Im really concerned about the side effects. He says no no, they go away.

While I only took 12.5 mg for 1 week, and this is 2 weeks later, and Im still suffering side effects. I pretty much became psychotic on this medication. My vision is all messed up. Im still getting dizzy. This is 2 weeks later and I only took the medication for 1 damn week.

does anyone know how long this is going to last for???

It has an average half life in "normal controls" of about 26 hours, figuring a 5x elimination, between 5 and 6 days. It eliminates by glucuronidation, therefore P450 does not come into effect with other medications.

It does bind to melanin, which exists in the eye, although an actual eye disorder after 1 week seems unlikely. Vision abnormalities do occur at significant levels above placebo, though at what dosage would be unclear as these were with concomittant usage of other AEDs in epilepsy studies.

Your clearance may be vastly different from the average clearance of the drug and you may in fact still have a small percentage in your system and are very sensitive to its visual effects.

I would give it, as uncomfortable as it is, another week or at least part of one, before continuing to follow up with your doctor which is of course paramount in what you are describing.

Best wishes

That's wierd I always have side effects just started lamictal at 25mg according to the starter pack and haven't noticed a thing. And I didn't know it was considered strong. What dose did you start on? Love Phillipa ps I spit the dose 1/2 in the am 1/2 at bed time. Love Phillipa

Once again, same here for me. I usually have side effects with everything but not the Lamictal. I started with 25mg for 2 weeks and am now going into my 4th week at 50mg. No side effects. I take mine all at once in the morning. All of the meds have scary side effects listed. I hesitate on taking anything because of them, but Lamictal seemed to have the least severe of them all. The rash and eye thing are scary, but I'm keeping an eye on them.(no pun intended) I'm glad at least I don't have to have blood tests with this med.
