technology of the board question

Posted by heaven help me on May 27, 2006, at 15:03:39

OK, I still find posts within posts that I don't see on the main board. For example, for me I see "What kind of NARDIL is this I got" as a post on the main board, with no responses. But, when I go in to read it, there are several response posts in there with it. Why? Can't I just look at ALL the posts on the main board? (don't want to miss anything) - this all happened right after "refresh" so I know that's not it. Ideas?

Yeah, I've noticed this also for at least a few weeks now and do not like it either.

OK, I think that when the board gets "cleaned" (as in all older posts get sent upstairs to that condensed list), that only the posts formed after such and such a date remain seen on the main boards. But, as you go into a current post, you will see under it all the responses to that post, those new AND those prior to the "clean" date. Make sense? Sheesh. Glad I at least THINK I figured it out!

Oh, now I understand what you meant.

Yes, the main list of all the threads on a subject board is organized by date. All posts after a certain cut-off date are retained, temporarily, to give some continuity to the list. Older posts are archived, with the date on that archive being the first day that is stored in that archive segment.

The list under a specific post are all posts to that thread, ever. For long threads, to keep that list manageable, only a segment of that list is shown. The first post ever, some dots (meaning there are more posts, not shown), and then the posts in and around the time of the one you're reading. Then, maybe some more dots, indicating there are also later posts in that thread. If you move up and down the list of all posts in a thread, you see about 30 to choose from. But if there's actually hundreds in a thread, you can follow it back just be clicking on the post at the head of the list.

Dr. Bob used an Effexor XR thread in his presentation at the APA convention. At that point in time, there were something like 9630 posts to that thread. By now, it may well be past 10,000. It would be impractical to try and list them all every time you selected any one post in that list. So, you only see a few posts at a time, each from a selected period of time.

I was able to follow a post just like you said, dots and all. I get it!
Thank you!
