Research into happines

Though this article was mildly interesting

What the psychologists say at the end is quite annoying!

I wonder were exactly the electrode was implanted?

What if it gets stuck ON?

Drunk hits your car: "Hey, nice MP3 player :)"
Server gets hacked: "Let's grab a Heineken :)"
Wallet is stolen: "Love your sandals :)"
Rip seat out of pants: "Look, it's a rare pteridophyte :)"

I just don't know about the electrode...?

Far from annoying, these guys think were depressed and stupid, first of all i can only speak for myself of course but i dont even like to use the term DEPRESSION,i became symtpomatic at age 19,so i remeber the other side of the grass.

I know what depression is,its usualy a external situation, although could be just a mood, where a person feels down, kinda empty, they usualy then seek a resource,tv,phone call to a friend, even some beer, maybe a night out,or possably just call it a day and sleep it off.

This is just a mood.

I do not suffer this,i do not seek happiness..........rather i seek RELIEf,i am not at a stable state looking to reach a higher level of joy, instead i am in a constant state of emotional pain, numbess, anxiety, discomofort, fatigue and endless symptoms that vary through the day but are ALWAYS present

What i hope from these drugs,is to simply allow me to subdue the pain just enough so I CAN DO THE THINGS THAT will make me who i am.

"DEPRESSION" is constant, and because of that it robs u of your personality, your humour, your whole ora,and it also robs others from ever getting to know the real u.

You cant hang out and be yourself while your sitting there on fire do your best to simply not get up 'scream and head for the hills.

AH thats the kind of thinking towards what i have that made me stop telling anyone outside my circle anything about me in that sense,i dont bother arguing anymore and it infuriates me when they try to force this idea upon me,as if i never thought to myself......."wait,what am i doing, why dont i go out, have fun! and give up this whole im sick routine,.........arr very frustrating

One of the doctor-critics said this:

"It seems to me that drugs as a solution to unhappiness are rather similar to kind of, you know, say plastic surgery to enhance your beauty or whatever."

Yeah, except: plastic surgery DOES enhance your beauty, kind of, you know. Bad analogy alert....

Hey there Tom

I found the whole article rather weird to be honest. Yeah and those comments at the end.

But maybe being 'unhappy' is very different from being 'depressed' in this context. Obviously you can be unhappy but not depressed.

Did you watch the programme??

Kind regards

Meri

Wow! I really liked the part:

Leading psychologist Professor Ed Diener argues against artificial routes to happiness.

"We do not want to create a society that's happy because of drugs".

I find that so ignorant. Reading this board, you find that people are constantly anguishing about whether they should take a med(s)-not exchanging info on how incredibly happy they are on their meds. People have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to take sufficient meds just to be reasonably functional and not to be in constant emotional pain.

Sure, we all know there is a lot of situational suffering in life and no one's trying to avoid that with meds. I hope the writer doesn't think of that as one of his life's Insightful Revelations.

I again suggest my Path to Emotional Enlightenment to these folks: 1 or 2 months of severe depression and anxiety and the promise that it would happen again in the future. They'd be embarrassed at the words they'd written.

That's VERY interesting. I bet if you work at it hard enough you can condition your body to send happiness impulses to your brain without an electrode though..thats probably how successful CBT works..an electrode would be nice...then you could just push the "happy button" whenever you want..

Wow-a new home business! Install it yourself brain electrodes-we could sell a kit with the electrodes, a power drill and some bits:

"Anxious? Depressed? Get HappyBrain, the New Age Electrode System, and start living the good life! (battery not included)"

I say who cares. Happy people are productive people. Happy people are caring people. Happy people don't start wars and don't abuse others.

We live in a world that seems to have been growing increasingly anal about people 'freeloading' in the game of life.

I say who cares. What is life about? If, at the end of ones life, one can't reflect on a happy existence, then what else do we have?

I have no issue with people doing whatever is neccesary to recieve the gratification, and satisfaction they require and deserve.

I find that the people who are so viamently against the use of antidepressants are probably suffering from some sort of dysthemic disorder. Cause in the end, if you're satisfied with your life, why should you care if somebody else is satisfied with theirs?

I think it comes down to jealousy. If you're miserable, then you're going to be jealous of others' happiness, and as a consequense you're going to be against other people finding happiness.

If you're satisfied and happy with you're life, you are free from jealosy, and often are interested in doing whatever you can, to help others feel better as well.

Thats my take

I think the salient part of this research is the part about the pain. I would let them put an electrode in my brain. Not very long ago, I contemplated having my left arm removed, on the chance it would take the pain. I know better, but I contemplated it.
