Ambeien and Maois...........

Posted by willyee on May 14, 2006, at 19:33:36

Heres an issue i see with the two,and i suppose it would be a problem with many drugs as well.

Maois inhibit many things, hence the danger tyramine? So would it not be correct to say you cant always apply the STANDERD half life of a drug to cocomitment use with MAOIS?Since the Maoi could very well be prolonging its removal?

I ask this because along with other sleep drugs,i took ambien the other night,i was running low so i did not have the dose i usualy take, and well sleep drugs period are never a guranentee to work even if they do 99.9 percent, there might always be that night where ur nust agigtated or whatever else have u?

Anway back to the point,as morning came up,having slept maybe an hour here or there,i felt extremly maniac, like i could feel the ambien in me.

I felt the ambien in me the entire day,i felt like my body was asleep but my mind wouldent?

If this theory is true at all, maybe this is another serious concern with maois,to understand that its not just tyramine interactions to becareful of ,but to be weary that any standerd drug might not not have its normal effects on u .

Any ideas if this makes sense?

All I can tell you is that there is no documented interactions between Ambien and any MAOI. This is from referencing many different web sites that you can do a drug interaction look-ups on plus the fact that my doctor who prescribed my MAOI also gave me Ambien for sleep.

Maois and documented information for myself is not helpful, for example pubmed explains the use of a parnate/ritalin combo, this combo at a low dose put me in ER.

Of course i can only apply my own personal experiances to anything,i am having success with ambien but the one night when this happened just made me wonder if the prolonging of drugs in the system while on a maoi may have contributed.

Maoi use should be used in caution even though it seems on the surface that all lot of worry is hype, true as that may be the reason for the concern is when and if it does happen,a interaction i mean,it is not a pretty sight, not at all.

I dont mean here to diswade its use, just being a veteran maoi user of 5 years share some experiance.

I have taken MAOI's for over 25 years straight and I swear I think I know more about this class of drugs than some of the doctors I have been too. I needed surgery once and had the doctor swear up and down that there was no way I could be put out while on an MAOI. I had to bring in a ton of literature to prove him wrong. And I agree that the MAOI's are not 'safe' but neither is long term depression or debilitating anxiety. Depression itself kills more people every year than any MAOI, a fact that escapes many people when they argue against their use. To me if you have tried all the other class of drugs and are still in so much emotional pain that you can't stand living anymore taking the MAOI plunge is the right thing to do.

Just my .02... :-)
