Is there difference between Paxil and generic?

Posted by UgottaHaveHOPE on May 12, 2006, at 13:49:49

Has anyone noticed a difference in the two?

Why do pdocs always prescribe for the generic if I dont say anything? Is that the way it is everywhere>

Probably is a difference. There always is. But sometimes people prefer the generic to the brandname version, and vice versa.

Why do they prescribe? Probably for insurance purposes--or they assume you want to save money.

In Washington State (where I am) the pharmacist is required to give you the generic, if there is one, unless you specifically request the brand-name drug.

In other states (I've lived in North Carolina), there are two signature lines on the RX pad. If the doctor signs the "Dispense as written" line they have to give you exactly what is written. If the doctor signs the "Substitution permitted" line, they can give you a generic, and they can even give you a higher dose than prescribed. For example, if the RX is for 90 1mg Xanax pills, they can give you 45 2mg pills instead and say "take 1/2 pill"...

I have personally taken Paxil during the spring of 2004 (when it became generic), and didn't notice any difference whatsoever between the effects of the real Paxil and the generic Paroxetine.

Eric I live in NC and the pdoc has signed for namebrand only and the insurance companies won't pay anyway since there is a generic available. Love Phillipa

In NC I'm pretty sure the doc can sign "Substitution Permitted" meaning you get the generic if one exists. Better yet, if you want your insurance to pay for it, just ask the doc to prescribe "Paroxetine" instead of "Paxil". Paroxetine is the chemical name for the drug that is sold as brand name Paxil.
