birth control pill and depression

Posted by jessers11581 on May 6, 2006, at 16:06:50

I've been on the pill for almost 10 years now, and recently, my doctor told me that it's very likely that this could be affecting me emotionally. Apparently, oral contraceptives are notorious for exacerbating depression and anxiety. And since I've pretty much always taken it (with no breaks), I have no idea whether it's a factor in my problems. So I've decided to go off it for a while and see what happens. Have any of you ladies out there found that taking the pill worsened your depression? Please share your experiences with me! Thanks, Jess :)

I found that I can't take ortho tri cyclen or seasonale, real bad depression and crying especially on ortho tri cyclen. I do ok though on ortho cyclen. I have read that if you get depression, it's best to take the ones that are the same pill every day, not the ones that have different hormone amounts (and different color) for each week.

Jess,

I was on BC for 20 something years. I remember the first month that I was on it, I felt like h*ll! I called my ob/gyn's office several times, and they assured me that it was not the BC that was doing that to me.

Fast-forward 20 something years and I have discovered that I have thyroid issues. I have done my research and discovered that one of the things that BC can do to you is cause and/or exacerbate thyroid problems. Hypothyroidism is notorious for making you feel depressed, fatigued, etc.

Do your own research. Find what you feel "fits" for you. I very strongly believe that the BC that I was on for many, many years, made me depressed and fatigued (because of hypothyroid issues).

Take Care,
Flame

I second Phillipa's opinion. I took ortho tricyclen for almost a year, and I would cry for hours a few days a week (whenever the formula changed). I finally figured it out. My husband said good-bye to his "psycho-wife" as he called me. After a few months off of contraceptives I started on one that has a constant level of estrogen & progesterone. MUCH better. It helped with my acne too. Unfortunately, it kind of negatively affected my sex drive. So, I opted to have pimples and be horny again. Also, I found out that I have a genetic blood clotting disorder (puts me at risk for deep vein thrombosis), so it's good for me to use non-hormonal contraceptives. These female hormones can definitely affect mood. Any doctor that suggests otherwise has probably never experienced PMS or menopause...

I cannot take any BC pills. No matter what formula I take, it makes my depression much, much worse. For me, there are other methods of birth control that will work and not cause me to cry and be an emotional wreck. If you are having problems on the pill, it might be a good idea to choose another method of BC.

Good luck.
