Does EMSAM cause weight gain?

Posted by jealibeanz on May 6, 2006, at 23:10:38

Has anyone heard of EMSAM causing weight gain like other antidepressants? I gained a lot of inexplicable weight on Paxil, Buspar, Wellbutrin, and Effexor. I'm worried about the serotonin and weight. Appetite isn't a problem whatsoever. They didn't make me hungry. I've never over eaten and always workout for at least 2 hours daily, being a competitive athlete.

I wouldn't think so as it doesn't go through the digestive pathway goes directly to the bloodstream due to the patch. It on the skin you don't swallow it. I have no personal experience with it but thinking hard about changing to the patch. Not for weight as I don't gain wt form the AD's. Love Phillipa . Hope a lot of responses

So the absorption through the digestive tract somehow promotes weight gain with those sensitive ti SSRI's?

To be honest I'm not sure. But they say the receptors for serotonin are in the gut. Link would know the answer to that. Post a Tread to link and ask or babblemail him. Love Phillipa

Phillipa, that's what I would think. The patch bypasses the serotonin in your gut, so whatever endocrine stuff that normally would happen, won't, with the patch. But I'm not sure, because I don't really understand how SSRIs cause weight gain, if they are interacting with the GI serotonin system or if they do something else.

The manufacturer has an average weight loss among patients taking it, like -1.2 pounds, but I never know how reliable their data is.

Best of luck jealibeanz, I think a few posters have been on Emsam a few weeks now so maybe they can tell us if they notice anything dramatic so far.

I would say no, with regard to EMSAM causing weight gain. If anything, it's causing behavior which could lead to weight loss, because I've been more inclined to be out and about (running, walking, hiking, at the gym).

No weight gain yet, but I am on it only a little over a week, I think. I have gained weight on the other AD's like you and while I am not really competiive, I am an athlete of sorts. The other AD's made it really hard to get the motivation to do athletic endeavors however. So far, weight neutral but between the effexor withdrawal and migrains that I can't take the triptans for with the patch, I have not gotten back up to speed with my activities yet. It is a nod to the patch that I am not freaking out about getting flabbly....
