Stupid half tablet of Nardil

Posted by gardenergirl on April 28, 2006, at 15:23:24

Bah.

I recently tried to go from 52.5 mg of Nardil back to 45 mg, mainly because I was tired of cutting the pills, but also because I was feeling a lot better. I wanted to see if I could cut down to a maintenance dose.

Silly me. Can't do that. No way.

Bah.

Sorry. Life is full of inconveniences.

:-(

There really isn't such a thing as a maintenance dosage of an antidepressant. Whatever the dosage is that successfully treats the acute episode is the same dosage that is necessary for prophylaxis.

What happens when you raise the dosage to 60mg?

You think 60 would be too much? Maybe more side effects? Maybe you're super sensitive to medications, I'm not at all myself, i would definitely go to 60. Just my opinion though..you do what's best for you. :)

I know I'm complaining about something minor with cutting the tablets. It's just that at 60 mg I start to get urinary retention and peripheral edema, so 52.5 is better.

And I also think I'm just going through a phase where I realize I'm always going to be on meds, and that is bothering me. Even though I know that it's really okay. It's just bothering me right now. Probably part of the therapy termination process and dealing with what the future holds.

Thanks for the support, everyone.

i KNOW, i HATE that!! i so wish they made Nardil in 10mg doses instead of 15-- or better yet, in 15mg And 7.5mg doses.
My ideal dose (considering benefits & side effects) is also 52.5mg/day. i'm at 45 right now. And i've also thought about cutting a pill and taking 52.5mg every day, but it really is a major pain and inconvenience. i don't think it's really that minor... Because it's hard enough to remember to take each dose, and to take the necessary extra pills with you when you leave your home, and to take each dose at the right time and where your boss or teacher or whoever can't see you doing it. Then to have to remember to have half a pill with you each day and .. yeah, it's a pain.
But i'm still considering it. And i don't blame you for doing it, or for getting sick of it.
Okay take care.

And those are entirely valid reasons for wanting to take 52.5mg, and completely reasonable. And cutting pills in half is a pain in the patootie.

AND EVEN IF NONE OF THAT WAS TRUE, IF IT BOTHERS YOU TO CUT THOSE PILLS, THEN IT BOTHERS YOU! Minor, schminor -- what's this minor stuff?

Cutting the tablets for my cat drives me nuts, too. I cut a bunch all at once, so that I just grab what I need, and that's that. Maybe you could so something like that? Quick bit of math, "How many of these need to be cut to make the right dose?," and then cut a bunch once a month?

Or, grouse about it. Which is OK. And if it bothers you, it's OK to grouse about it. (A smart woman tries to teach me that sort of thing sometimes, so I figured I'd pass some of it back to her...)

Thanks Questionmark. I did worry that I was complaining about something silly. And it sort of amazes me that half a tablet can have such a strong effect. But there you go.

You know, I've gotten to the point where I just take my pills when they are due, and I don't really care who's around. I figure if someone assumes something about it, well, whatever.
But at school, I suppose that might be different.

But wouldn't a once daily dose of Nardil be awesome?

Take care,

gg

Hi,
Thanks for asking. Yes, I'm better. I think it helped just to realize the connection between feeling more depressed and lowering my dose. And then I went back up to 52.5 mg. Nardil usually acts quite quickly me on me, so I notice effects of increasing the dose fairly quickly.

Oh, and you should ask my buddy Racer about hearing me complain. I may not post it much, but I certainly do complain. That must be why she said I need spanking. :)

Thanks for the validation and reminder. You must have very wise friends. ;)

Actually, I do cut about a week or two's worth at a time. I could do more, but I worry about the stability of the medication, which is probably worrying too much.

It's just that extra few minutes it takes when I'm filling my weekly pill case that annoys me. Sigh. But I am entitled to be annoyed, I guess. And now that I learned I shouldn't try to wipe off pill schmutz from the blade on the cutter with my finger (OUCH!), it's not as bad.

A once daily dose of Nardil would be SO freaking awesome...
especially since the effects of one tablet/dose seem to wear off (or start to at least) after 6 to 12 or so hours for me.
