Does anyone know if the new drug AMITIZA (lubiprostone) is available in the USA yet? It is for chronic constipation and totally a new type of drug class. I am constipated and my meds are doing the situation worser. I tried from fiber to sport, drinking taking laxatives and combos but nothing really helped to have a normal bowle movement.

Hi Ben
Your local pharmacy may be able to obtain it even though it is not approved in your country. Have you asked them whether they can get hold of it?

I was constipated a little bit ever in my life and suddenly I had a infection in the GI-tract with diarrhea. Then I developed IBS typ c (constipation with pain and bloating), probably postinfectious IBS. The problem now is, that anticholinergic drugs like TCA are making the constipation stronger. With Efexor and Cymbalta there is constipation as a side effect often experienced - me too.
My Lithium(aspartate) immediate release that I take at night doesnt help the constipation - Lithium causes often diarrhea; but not for me. Lamictal doesnt seam to interact but Neurontin def. makes the constipation bader.
Okay, as a pharmacist. i know the whole palete from laxatives. I tries Transipeg and Movicol (isoosomtic laxatives containing PEG), then Dulcolax (containing bisacodyl - a stimulating laxative for accelerate the transit time - but makes cramps on the oder side), bulk forming agents (psylli semen, lini semen, fiber riche products, guar etc.) and diet (enough vegetables and fruits but they tend do make the bloating worser. Then I tried gastor oil (not bad but still bloating) several things in combination. Yes, magnesia was a try worth but my GI-tract gets bubbeling all the way and when I can go to the toilet, then it is diarrhea or I cant. Magnesia is difficult to dose and the preparations have a lot of artificial sweeteners in it - bloating me up. I tried several times to rinse the whole GI-tract with Fleet and products like that. It is bad but brings me short relief of bloating.
I read a interesting article on PubMed using melatonin to treat IBS: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15914575&query_hl=1&itool=pubmed_docsumBut I am scared to take melatonin because I read several times, that it can make the depression worser?!
Officialy I am diagnosed with "slow-transit constipation" because
I was tested with markers and I had a transit time which was three times longer than the average men in my age. So thats why I am interested in lubiprostone.
Zelmac and other agents who influence the motility like domperidone or metoclopramide are useless in my case.sincerely

Hi Ben :)
You should switch your babblemail on so we can email some time :)
Please can you list all the medication (and doses) which you are taking at the moment?
Have you ever tried docusate? It can work as a stool softener.
>I tries Transipeg and Movicol (isoosomtic laxatives containing PEG)
No help?
>bisacodyl
Have you tried senna tablets as well?
>I tried several times to rinse the whole GI-tract with Fleet and products like that. It is bad but brings me short relief of bloating.
Ever tried glycerin/glycerol suppositories?
Oh and liquid paraffin oral liquid (mineral oil). Ever tried it? It's rarely used in the UK these days. I believe the risks have been greatly overexaggerated, the risk of aspiration is negligible in most patients. In general, liquid paraffin seems to cause less side effects than widely used laxatives such as lactulose.
