No offense to Ed, He knows his stuff and I respect his advice and opinions. However, FOR ME Anafranil didn't touch my OCD, I tried it twice out of desperation once for 8 mos. the other for 6 mos. The only thing it did for me was give me a heck of a lot of side effects, including very dry mouth, weight gain, sedation, and difficulty having an orgasm. REMEMBER, just because it didn't help me doesn't mean it will not help you. Good luck.

Did imipramine (Tofranil) interfere with your ability to exercise?

I've been on meds since 1997--started when I was seventeen. From first to last, these are the meds I've taken: Paxil, Xanax, Ambien, Trazodone, Zoloft, Celexa, Wellbutrin, Luvox, Lexapro, and Cymbalta.

Paxil: made me extremely sleepy and I gained weight, but I think it probably saved my life at the time; took it for 2 years

Trazodone: great for sleep, but didn't need it after being on Paxil for awhile

Celexa: worked great for about 3 years

Wellbutrin: made me absolutely insane; terrible experience

Zoloft/Luvox: didn't take for very long; don't remember much about them

Lexapro: made me nauseous and spacy (or at least I thought so at the time)

Cymbalta: seems to be okay so far...although I've noticed increased lethargy since increasing to 60 mg. I don't feel that I have as much brain fog with it as some of the SSRI's. I can't tell whether it's good for obsessive-compulsiveness or not...I still have my OCD moments.

Here's my list of drugs I've taken in just the past three years:

Lexapro, Paxil, Effexor XR, WEllbutrin, Zoloft, REmeron, Lithium, Depakote, Neurontin, Lamictal, Trileptal, TOpamax, Keppra, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Abilify, Trilafon, Haldol, Seroquel, Atarax/Vistaril, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Propranolol, Strattera, Provigil, Adderall, Concerta, Dexedrine, Ambien, Trazodone, SOnata, Resotirl, Halcion, and Lunesta.

Wow... at this point, I'm very deeply depressed. Does anyone have any suggestions for something I haven't tried or something I should try again?

How about the MAOI's? Parnate, Nardil or EMSAM "The Patch."

thansk for the suggestion. my drs have never suggested MAOIs or even tricyclics, though I'd be willing to try them. I see my dr soon; maybe i'll ask, but i have a feeling there might be too many interactions since i'm on so many meds. thanks again,

CareBear,
You said you aren't feeling well so why would you continue the meds you are on? There's a good chance MAOIs will conflict with your current regime so you'd have to let go of that combo. Give MAOIs a shot!

Well that's a good sign. TCAs can affect heart rate and blood pressure. Are you still interested in clomipramine?

although my hear rate was a little high, caffiene induced i beleive when taken, my pdoc even once suggested adding 25-50 mgs. anafranil to my "zac", i feel better knowing i have so many options i haven' t tried out of just plain fear of side-effects, thanks...john

well I'm only 12 years on the med-go-round.
tofranil, anafrinil, prothiedin, moclobomide, aropax(paxil), prozac, cipramil(celexa), luvox, effexor xr, zyprexa, seroquel, temazepam, rohypnol, mogadon, xanax, oxazepam, valium, clonazepam, sodium valproate (Epilim). I'm sure there is more but that's all I can recall at this point in time. Paul.

It's very interesting. Since we life in the time of SSRI's (maybe due to the "it just works" propaganda of pharmaceutical producers) the MAO's and some Benzo's are still very often mentioned.

I'm sure you have a busy life and things to do, but a little while back sdb posted a Grand Rounds about treatment resistant depression at

http://psychiatry.uchicago.edu/grounds/011015/

It offers some fascinating insight into what truly may work for patients

http://www.edc.gsph.pitt.edu/stard/

is the result of this enormous study called Star*D
and there are numerous links about it. I know it doesn't add to additional drug information for you but it may provide some insight into treatment resistant depression.

Hi P

Did you find flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) similar to nitrazepam (Mogadon)?

Yes it is but it is stronger and works faster, it's still prescribed here but it's literally impossible to get a script for it these days and it can give you terrible retrograde amnesia, for example, sometimes you don't remember going to bed. Paul

I can definitely understand, 15 years my pdoc wanted me to try Nardil and I said NO THANK YOU!
I was scared to death of MAOI's. Everyone needs to take something they are comfortable with. By the way, thank you for being so supportive and positive to all of us here at psycho-babble.You are very kind and we need more people like you around here. :)

Sincerely,
Tyler

Tyler for the same reason as you terrified. Maybe this patch will change my mind as the thought that I can take it off would make a difference and I don't have to get it out of my sytem. Like I said I couldn't take the pill form of hormone replacement but could use the cream. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi P

I think it's because recommended dose is too high. If you took a really high dose of nitrazepam it would have the same effect!
