Meds and mania?

Posted by TrishP on March 9, 2006, at 7:19:40

If someone is prone to mania, what meds are best?

I notice that if I take any SSRIs (prozac, zoloft, lexapro, etc.) I am prone to mania.

Also - Trazodone makes me feel hung over in the morning and I tend to over do the coffee (combined with an SSRI you get mania).

I'm taking Provigil right now and it does help with keeping me alert during the day, but doesn't help with depression. I still need something to lift my mood.

Wellbutrin alone make me irritable (common I know).

I'm not really sure what to do. I am overweight and cannot afford to gain anymore weight.

I've tried various mood stabilizers with various side effects.

Any suggestions? I need an AD that won't cause mania and weight gain.

Apart from the ssri's I know that Wellbutrin and Parnate are both good anti-d's that are safe for bipolar (I am one too.)

Hello Trish,
I;m in a similar situation to you.. i become maniac off just about all antidepressants... i think you should try to treat ur depression with mood stabilizers... dont let the connatation confuse u... two mood stabilizers with serious antidepressant kick are lithium and lamictal... lamictal actually sent me hypomanic but i take lithium now and it helps with my depression...

If the wellbutrin isn't helping I vote for bps. Fondly, Phillipa
