Is imipramine still used?

Posted by Maxime on February 18, 2006, at 17:45:18

Just looking at things I might be able to add to my prozac. Has anyone taken imipramine and were the effects.

I took it about 10 years ago. The immediate side effects were dry mouth, constipation, sleepiness, antihistamine like drying of the sinuses, and increased heart rate. The dry mouth and constipation went away eventually. The other side effects stayed. No sexual side effects. And I think that Prozac will increase blood levels of immipramine.

It was very effective but I didn't like the increased heart rate so I discontinued. Its quite inexpensive. And if you have allergies, you won't need your Claritin or Benadryl anymore.

yeah, its still used. Here in the US I think its usually rx'd as Tofranil-PM...its a once-daily form. Generic imipramine can also be taken 1X daily once the blood levels are steady.

Anyway, I took Tofranil with cymbalta, adderall, buspar, and Klonopin; it was OK, except for the cardiovascular side effects. I think adding Tofranil made the AD response **faster**, but then it plateud, so overall I cant say how beneficial it was. Using it with an SSRI might be better.
