Asking my doctor if I can try something

Posted by Maxime on February 14, 2006, at 19:47:12

Two psychopharmacologists agreed that it was probably the Trileptal that made the Parnate ineffective for me. The Prozac isn't working for me. What I want to do is go off the Prozac and taper myself off the trileptal over the 5 weeks I have to wait to get the Prozac out of my system.

I hope he will agree to the plan.

Maxie you slipped and did it again you'll know what I mean if you reread your original Thread. Fondly, Phillipa

No I didn't, because usually I would just go ahead a do it. This time I am going to talk it over with my doctor and see if he agrees. If he doesn't, then I won't do it.

I have to be a part of my treatment. I know my body better than anyone else.

Hi Maxie

Do you think you'll need a different med for hypomanic-type symptoms (eg. racing thoughts) if you stop taking the Trileptal?

Well that's the thing. I have been diagnosed both bipolar and unipolar. I really don't think I am bipolar. If I am it's Bipolar type 3 - medication induced. I am still using 3.5 mg of clonazapam.

They took me off the Trileptal without weaning me off it in the hospital and I went MANIC and PSYCHOTIC. Not just hypomanic. But if I wean myself over a period of 5 five weeks, I think I will be okay.

I just feel like we are searching for answer when one already exists. The Parnate worked. It's the only med that has ever gotten rid of my depression completely.

I don't know, it seems like the obvious solution to me ...

I am bipolar too and on Parnate. I was on abilify but I found (as did my doctor) that the Parnate was enough. It does not cause mania and it takes care of depression so we just dropped the abilify.

Good luck!

When you were taking the Parnate, and it was effective against your depression, did you have sedation/amotivation/lethargy, and did it cause weight gain?

(Yes -- I'm desperately looking again. Wellbutrin just ain't cutting it...)

Thanks. And best luck -- I hope this works for you, and it sounds as though it might.

Thanks! Yes, I was fine when I was just on Parnate. But my doctor thought I was bipolar so he added the trileptal.

I think MAOIs are the least likely to cause mania/hypomania.

Bye.

Hi Racer. Parnate was the best thing that ever happened to me. It causes a weird sedation in the afternoon ... more like a fatigue. But not enough to stop me from taking it. It caused no weight gain at all, although at the higher doses (100 plus), it can cause edema. I think you should try it.

Racer no, Parnate does not cause weight gain. If anything it is more likely to cause weight loss. And out of the three MAOI's out there (of which I don't even like to count Nardil anymore since they screwed with the formula and made it a waste of time and money) Parnate is the most activating. It also has a short half life (the time it takes for the body to clear half of it from your system) of around 2 hours so that after 4 hours your body has eliminated it. Maxime, that might have been why you had an afternoon onset of fatique.
