Nicotine for OCD

Posted by Red_Rach on January 17, 2006, at 13:17:35

Hi,

I have OCD and am currently in the middle of a re-lapse. Taking Prozac at the moment but its wonderful effect seems to have wore off for the moment.

I've read in various places that Nicotine can very much help OCD? Is this true? I'm not a smoker and I dont want to smoke either, but something like chewing gum to stop the symptoms would be great!

Hey , Hi,
i was just discussing the nicotine thing with my brother yesterday, i have actually read somewhere that people wear the "patch, in conjuction with other meds, to help depression!!
i beleive nicotine raises dopamine a bit, good for depression in some, not good for ocd, which i have also!!
odd about the gum thing though, i am an avid gum chewer, most times all day, i hear that any type of repetive motion, even chewing, raises serotonin somewhat!! sounds wayout i know, but exercise like jogging, with it's repetive quality, also raises serotonin, good for us ocd'ers...john

I've heard of nicotine gum being usefull in tourettes disorder. THought I'd never heard of its use in OCD.

In general, stimulants make OCD worse, unless there is a componenet of ADD.

Nicotine may be different, due to its interactons with other systems.

I've read on here people saying they felt nicotine helped. I chewed some nicotine gum yesterday, and I must admit that for a short period I felt quite relaxed.

Ultimatly though, I get the feeling Prozac has pooped out on me again :(. Ive been looking up Celexa as a good alternative, is this true?

Yes I have heard that too. Nicotine has other properties besides being a stimulant. It has some effects on the cholinergic system. Don't know a whole lot, but its effects in schitsophrenia and tourettes are probably not properties attributable to other stimulants.
