AD induced cycling: a poll request

Posted by Berberis on January 10, 2006, at 19:47:52

Have you experienced mood instability (cycling, hypomania, mania) as a result of taking an antidepressant of the SSRI variety WITHOUT any prior history of bipolar tendancies? I have, and I've always been curious how common this is.

Yes (nm)

Yep. For my full response, I'll direct you to a post that I just made on another thread...

I think that happened to me. Over the years I was alway diagnosed as depressed, but 2 years ago, I was on wellbutrin and klonopin. I was still having trouble of some sort, so my psychiatrist added paxil cr (i'm pretty sure this is an ssri). I then went through a period of amazing work production and people skills, soaking my clothes with sweat, and dangerous road rage. Since then I've been diagnosed as bipolar. I never had a "typical" mania prior to that.

A history of alcoholism and noncompliance make my memories and diagnosis's unreliable, so don't read too much into this.

Now that I realize what has been wrong with me for as long as I can remember, I can answer this with some certainty.

I cycled before the 1st SSRI (Zoloft) between depression and almot-euthymia. And in-between the Zoloft and the Celexa. However, I cycled very rapidly and much more severly on the SSRI's.

I just wanted to add to my previous statements that when I had my hypomanic periods as part of my SSRI-induced cycling, it was relatively mild in the sense that it didn't involve any impulsive behavior such as spending sprees or hypersexual behavior. But it was more of the euphoric/productive type of hypomania, as opposed to the agitated/irritable type.

Just wanted to make sure to include as many relevant details as possible for my survey response...

I just experienced my first hypomanic episode (I think) and cycling experience. I have been on Celexa in the past and had no cycling and when I went on it this time, I was okay except I still had a lot of anxiety. I was having a fairly regular cycle of feeling very nervous and scared in the mornings, wearing off at night, when I'd feel normal. I was taking Celexa 10mg. Also Klonopin .5 mg day.

Then I got more depressed. Very depressed. My pdoc increased my Celexa to 20mg (even though I knew increasing the Celexa would make me more anxious becasue it had in the past). He also increased my Klonopin to .5 mg three times a day.

for the first couple of weeks I was okay. But then I got very agitated and anxious and feeling like I was going to jump out of my skin. I had too many things going on at once and couldn't concentrate on any of them. I was freaking out. Always feeling like I'd had ten pots of coffee but bad mood at the same time. The triple Klonopin dosage might as well have been water for all the good it did.

I went back down to 10mg Celexa and now I'm deeply depressed again but not as agitated. But still very jittery and scared a lot of the time. I have about one day a week where I feel okay. The rest of the time I am either very deeply depressed, very agitated and scared or worst of all, both at the same time.
