Lamictal-minor rash-what to do?

Posted by waterfall on December 21, 2005, at 16:05:12

I have a mild, itchy rash on my upper arm. Started after a few weeks on Lamictal, has gotten a little worse lately. Just a little worse. No big deal. I've been on Lamictal for over 2 months (about) and this drug is really working for me and I don't want to stop taking it. What can I do about the rash to see if I can just manage it? I swear, if I develop a fever, or blisters, or whatever, I will go straight to the ER as that's what all the Web sites say to do, but what kinds of cream or whatever can people recommend for a mild Lamictal rash? I don't want to call my doc before I've tried to manage this myself, I'm afraid she'll over-react and take me off it. I see her Jan 6 and will definitely talk about it then.

My pdoc told me a similar rash was not Lamictal related since I had been at the same dose for several weeks.

Did you just increase your dose recently?

If not, it could be a simple contact dermatitis. Either way, hydrocortisone cream ought to help.

And yes, if it gets worse or you develop the other symptoms you mention, you should see your doc right away.

Sorry, I have to disagree with the amazing GG on this one. Hate it when that happens...

If you've got any sort of a rash while on Lamictal, it's in your best interest to see a doctor NOW. And, despite what one might expect, not the pdoc. Get in to see your GP or -- best bet -- a dermatologist. Even thought you're probably right about it not being The Rash, which is very rare and may not have happened to anyone who didn't have organic brain injury (that's what Dr CattleProd told me, anyway), there's also an allergic rash you can get. It's just like any other sort of allergic dermatitis, but it's still good to get it checked out. If you're having one sort of allergic reaction, and you ignore it, it can become more serious. That's why we try to avoid allergens...

(Except me, of course -- I have two allergens running around here, sitting on my lap, cuddling wiht me in bed... Proof I'm mentally ill, huh? lol)
