Ambien CR

Posted by MidnightBlue on December 9, 2005, at 14:49:42

Two questions:

1. can you break a 12.5 CR tablet in half and have it still work correctly?

2. anyone else wake with a headache that lasted several hours?

It did help me sleep better, but not sure it is worth it.

Wow-- I was just going to ask about splitting Ambien CR 12.5 in half and then saw your post. Talk about coincidence.

I've been taking 5 mg/night. However, I recently moved out of state and the pharmacies here won't honor/transfer my refills or accept a call-in from my previous doc.

It's going to be 2 weeks before I can see a new Dr. and all I happen to have is an unused bottle of Ambien CR 12.5 mg that I didn't like and I do not want to take that dosage.

I imagine the time-release function would be lost (?) but can anyone comment if splitting the pill in half would be equal to taking 6.25 mg?

To answer the second question from this post I've never had a headache from Ambien.

If it is time release I don't think you can split it. But when in doubt call a pharmacist. Fondly, Phillipa

Splitting Ambien CR

Phillipa,

When you say you don't think you can split it do you mean that this would simply negate the CR effect or that it just wouldn't work at all?

The pills are able to be physically cut in half. I'm pretty sure any pharmacist would simply tell me they're not meant to be split and therefore shouldn't be.

Phillipa,

It was my family doctor who thought it might be possible to split Ambien CR. The pill is a tablet that is coated on the outside with a rapid release and then longer acting on the inside. He didn't know for sure, and I'm sure a drug rep wouldn't be quick to impart that information since it would mean a prescription could last twice as long. He even said it might be worth a try. I was just wondering if anyone else had done so, and if it was safe.

cutting the tablets in two is no big deal. they still work well, and - yes - seem to be about half strength. This formulation (CR) seems to work better for me that plain ambien. sweet dreams all.

I have been taking Ambien for at least a year. I am perscribed 10 mg and then I break it in 1/2. I only need it to make my mind quiet down so I can stop thinking and doze off. I always wake after about 4 hrs and alot of times half to take the other 1/2 to get back to sleep.

I took Ambien CR for the first time last night. I was tired already but took it "just in case". I hate having to lay there and fight the mind conversation. (Not voices just thoughts :) ) Anyway. I slept 9 and 1/2 hours! STRAIGHT. Go to bed early the first time you take it. Or do it on a weekend.

I stopped in here to see if I could break it in 1/2 too. And I'm still not sure. So if there is anyone with real knowledge of this med being broken in 1/2 and still working properly PLZ let us know.

Much appreciation. (hug) TR
