Med to stop nightmares?

Posted by jerrympls on December 7, 2005, at 14:45:54

I've been plagued with nightly dreams that are really disturbing me. They are very stressful, depressing - even morbid dreams. I wake up EVERY morning from them with my heart racing. I take Ativan but that doesn't help.

I know I've heard of a med that can help supress dreaming - perhaps Clonidine? Anyone know if this is used? Or of anything else?

Thanks
Jerry

All of the SSRI's gave me nightmares. Periactin helped. So did the addition of remeron.

I take Ambien nightly and I am not really aware of any dreaming anymore. I'm dead to the world until my alarm goes off in the AM. It's great.

Best,
EE

What about just plain ole' Benadryl?

Sometimes, I use that if I can't sleep.

I also have Restoril for the occasions when I want to black out for about 9 hours. LOL

I think it may be the Seroquel I'm taking. It really puts me out. I'm trying to phase out the Seroquel because of the 100 pounds it caused me to gain. I have Ambien CR too - so I'm not sure which is causing the dreams.

I had EXTREMELY strange dreams on seroquel. I would say there is a large chance that that maybe the culprit.

I hate nightmares. And I do think meds give them to you. Fondly, Phillipa

Interesting fact:my partner was on seroquel, risperidone ect.Hed allways slept like a baby, peacefully, but on these drugs he had the most disturbing sleep:nightmares, terror,I watched him for most the night, jumping, crying, fighting, taking spasms. The pills he took b4 bed was 2 seroquel. We halved it to just one tab.No luck, that night it was even worse so he took the other pill .I figured it couldnt be the seroquel but something told me it was.The next night he took no seroquel at all. That night he slept like a baby again.Same thing happened 8 mounths later when he was hospitalized, they put him back on seroquel, the nightmares started again.(back off it again). Then a few mounths back he got the flu and took the drug containing pseodoephedrine from the chemist.Nightmares started again.Everyones different but thats what was doing it for him.
