Not everbody thinks they're smarter than their doctor.

I used to think that just because I read a few studies about some drug that all of a sudden I know more than my doctor.

Many times psychrists don't focus on the dumb little details (like which med has a higher affinitiy for such and such) mainly because they try and look at the bigger picture.

Sometimes it is only years in hindsight that I realize that my psychiatrist was actually doing me a favor by making certain decisions.

Sometimes its like being a kid. When I was growing up, I always thought I was smarter than my parents. "Oh their rules are so dumb, anyone can clearly see that..."

But as I got older, those dumb rules acutally made sence on a totally different level.

Some psychiatrists don't fester on the details, because it might not be necessary.

I'm really becoming interested in finding the "right" med - one that really helps me without miserable side effects, and I suppose that no one would be as interested in finding the answer as I might be (not even my pdoc - although I really like the guy). I have to live my life after all, so it's pretty darn serious. It'd be nice if I could do it without total despondency, anxiety, agitation or wicked sedation. I'm likely going to try and get a little "smarter" soon with regard to psychotropic meds. :-)

Thank you, gg, for questioning that assertion!

I think that in Beck's list of cognitive distortions, the reasoning given here ("I know thats true because Im one of them") might be an example of Overgeneralization: "If one instance is X, then the other instances are X."

FWIW, I think an example of Slippery Slope reasoning might be: "If you start thinking you have *some* info that your pdoc doesn't, you'll soon be thinking you have *all* the info and she doesn't have any!" (But there's a lot of overlap in these categories; ears hear distortions differently.)

I personally don't think it pays to evaluate anyone as "smarter" or "not as smart". Life is too complicated.

Now, "repetitious" is a different matter...  ;-)

So, we'll go to see Ace in Australia as our pdoc, to gg in the U.S. for psychological counseling, and to Ed in the U.K. for our psychopharmacy needs.

Its hard not to think u might know more than ur doc when they totaly wig out of talking about chemistry of medications, when they oviously blow u off when u begin to mention it.My doc gets this little annoyed look and tells me i read too much.

Honestly i believe they learn most of there knowledge in school, and like most people forget a good percentage of that,on the job however i do believe the docs learn mostly from the reps that come in,and as you know if you start doing that then you might actualy give credentials to that zoloft commercial with the very technical explanation of depression, the cartoon ball bouncing from point A to point B LOLL.

Yes, I agree, it is a rather extreme form of over-generalization, with a sample of one. I think it's also a fallacy of propositional logic, of the form "if p and q, q therefore p".

I think I'm smarter than my pdoc, and I post to Babble. Other people post to Babble, therefore they think they're smarter than their pdoc.

The poster did use an existential qualifier, "most", which weakens the counter-argument, making it, too, conditional.

I doubt this poster is correct, in any case.

Sounds like you will need to save up those frequent flyer miles, but works for me! ;-)

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding propositional logic to Psycho-Babble Social. Here's a link:
