Lunesta-- Good for depression?

Posted by Girlnterrupted on November 9, 2005, at 7:56:13

I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with Lunesta--the sleeping-aid pill?

The other day I was talking to my neighbor and she told me she was prescribed Lunesta. However, she said that she was pretty much ok with Ambien and didn't want to mess with it, so she asked if I wanted to try a few Lunestas (of all things, insomnia is one of my biggest problems.)

So I agreed and she gave me 2 pills. I tried them, and well, I don't think it made a big difference in my sleeping, as I think I have treatment resistant insomnia (everything I have so far seems to be treatment resistant!) but I started feeling much better when it came to my mood.

I was surprised that I spent a considerable amount of time talking on the phone to one of my friends. That is actually pretty unusual. I always say what I have to say and then find a reason to end the conversation, but yesterday I actually enjoyed talking on the phone and I found myself joking and laughing. It had to be the Lunesta. I mean, I swear I don't have enough energy to get up from bed, let alone to have a conversation where I can enjoy myself. I have to force the words out of my mouth.

Then I went outside and I didn't feel so irritable as usual--I'm always annoyed about something--anything, and suddenly I felt more "balanced," like, without that extra weight of intolerance/irritability/feeling-sick-for-no-reason.

Later I just felt this urge to get out and take a walk--completely unusual as well. I always feel the urge to stay in my bed waiting to rest enough until I can "feel better" but that time just never comes. But yesterday I just felt this need to go take a walk and I did so. Weird.

Has anyone here tried Lunesta? If so, have you felt similar effects?

Any comments welcome/appreciated.

I've had mixed results with lunesta. Sometimes I feel much better the following day, while other times I wake up so deeply depressed it staggers me. Probably some bipolar stuff being influenced by the lunesta, sometimes in a good way and sometimes not.

My daughter took lunesta for a few nights and slept like a baby she said. So of course she felt better and more alert the next day. Fondly, Phillipa

There was a study published showing Lunesta to have a slight anti-depressant activity. I'll try to find the study...
