Sex drive ehancing therapy

Posted by megj on October 31, 2005, at 23:31:58

I'm beginning my fourth week of Lexapro and I'm really starting to feel like my old self again. However, I'm also starting to experience a noticable dip in my libido.
While I am grateful for the relief from depression, my decrease in sex drive has arrived at a very inconvenient time. I'm planning a very romantic weekend in two weeks and don't want this to spoil it.
I've read that adding low dose naltrexone or bupronion (sp?) can help in this department. I'm female, 35 years old.
Can anyone share experiences with taking meds that have helped? If so, can you tell me about the side effects you've experienced?
TIA...

A lot of people have said that Wellbutrin helps. I've also heard that Buspar can help a bit. Neither of them really helped me with sex drive. The only thing I ever found that helped was taking a very brief med holiday - skip the med for a couple days. At least you'd be able to decrease the anorgasmia part of the side effects. However, since you are so newly on Lex, this might not be a good time to skip doses.

You could check on te alternative board for natural remedies. There are several threads there.

Hope you get to enjoy your weekend.

I don't think there is any really good way around it - Lexapro is the ultimate libido/performance killer.

I take 30 mg Lexapro each morning. I don't have sexual side effects if 24 hours have gone by since my last dose. So if I have sex in the morning, I take Lexapro after that.

I had some success the other day. It involved
Cialis 10mg (no need for that with you)
Deprenyl 1mg
l-dopa 130mg (mucana pruriens)
cabergoline 1 tab

I have no idea about how this may go with your Lexapro though. There were no side effects to speak of, and what there was came from the Cialis.

Dopamine agonists work (cabergoline is #1 for this).
I do believe in naltrexone based upon emerging research and my own experience with opioid agonists on libido, either at 4.5mg qhs or up to 25mg tid. However, use at high doses can have untoward psychiatric effects (attenuation of feelings of reward, outright despair, etc).

Tranylcypromine at either low (up to 30mg) or high (120-200mg/day) doses was profoundly pro-sexual (often rivaling recreational drugs often taken for this purpose) for me; others have said the same. At the 0.7mg/kg level usually used, though, a lot of people seem to report libido dampening.
