Geodon...when do I take it ?

Posted by redscarlet on October 25, 2005, at 18:17:17

I'm taking 40mg of Geodon and would like to know if it's OK if I take it all at night.
I have read that you should take it twice a day. Is that correct ???
My pdoc said to take it at night but I want to make sure I'm getting the full/most effect of this med.
I have taken Geodon a few times over the past five years and each time I took it all in the PM.
Am I taking this med the right way ?!?!?!?

Thanks

I take geodon all day. 4 pills, morning, noon, dinner and bed time. Geodon has a short half life of 7 hours. So if you take it all at night you won't be getting much effect from it the next day. Maybe it is supposed to be a sleep medicine for you?

Thanks Sebastian

No it's not for sleep, it's for my bipolar illness. In fact it doesn't make me sleepy at all, does it make you sleepy ?

I'll start taking it in the AM & PM...
Thanks :-)

When to take it? Never. That stuff seems to have more warnings than a high-voltage breaker box.

In all seriousness, is there a reason you're on that stuff? It never struck me as a particularly attractive drug. For treatment resistance, we have clozapine or olanzapine. If you want something mild, there is quetiapine. If you want something energizing, there's abilify. If I am not mistaken, it also affects the Qt interval; is it worth it to muck with that? If it's the only drug you respond to, maybe ...

Hi Chairman MAO

Yes it's the ONLY drug that helps me and I've tried LOTS of stuff but the Geodon just works !
I do know about the QT thing, I had an echocardiogram done before the first time I took it to make sure it was OK for me to take it, the cardiologist said I could go ahead and take it.
I have tried Abilify but got akathisia from it. I also got akathisia from Geodon the first time I took it, that's why I had to stop it the first time. It was so bad, it was like someone just keep turning the volume up on my nerves, everyday it got worse ! I could NOT sit still. However I have not ever had as good mental effect from it as I did from the first time I took it. Geodon was a MIRACLE for me the first time I took it (minus the akathisia !).

Good choice, AM and PM will work the best. No it does not make me tired either and I take a very high dose, 240 mg.

Have you ever tried molindone or clozapine?

I really believe in clozapine. BTW amantadine is a great treatment for akathesia, much more conducive to life than anticholinergics.
