PMS Mood Stablizers

Posted by SandyWeb on October 13, 2005, at 6:09:27

Hi all,

I have a question for anyone that can give me some input on this subject.

My meds really poop out during the first week or two of PMS (yes, I have a LONG PMS timeframe. Ugh!!)

I have been quite stable on my meds for about a year. But when I PMS, I become quite unstable and have to basically hold on for dear life to the knowledge that I will be okay once the PMS ends.

I get too near to the suicidal line, plus I start having fantasies in my head. The whole thing just gets too scary because I could act upon it if I don't grit my teeth and wait it out. But that is hard to do when the thinking is not stable enough to be acting rationally. Ugh and ugh.

I want to ask my doc for a mood stablizer when I see him in November. My question: has anyone used Topamax or Lamictal for PMS? Those are the two meds I'm interested in. I don't want to try anything else because I'm scared of messing with the meds I'm already on.

I'm leaning towards Topamax because of the weight issue. In the year that I've been stable on my med regimen, I have gained 50 pounds!!!!!! I know.....stop putting food in my mouth! Lol.

Thanks for getting back to me.

God bless,

Sandy

Have you considered having your hormones tested and going that route to combat the monthly yuck? That plan works for some. Hormone replacement has it's own set of things to be concerned about but that's true of just about EVERYTHING.

Sorry you are struggling during that lovely time.
