Benzodiazepines for SAD (gen. social anxiety dis.)

Posted by sdb on October 3, 2005, at 15:26:49

Hi!

Is here somebody having success against generalized SAD (Social anxiety disorder) without common substances like

Nardil (phenelzine), tranylcipromine, moclobemide, Klonopin (clonazepam), Lexotan (bromazepam, only very usefull >21mg (!), Versiani et al.), Topomax, Neurontin (Gabapentin) and all other SSRIS especially Paroxetin

?

Does somebody has success with common benzodiazepines, normally Valium, Prazepam, Tranxene, Solatran (Ketazolam) agaist SAD etc.? - normally only recommended for GAD probably also panic.

Unfortunately there are almost no dosage/efficacy studies for bz's transformed in N-Demethyl-Metabolites for SAD.

Kind regards

sdb

Valium, xanax, and ativan all worked well for me until my body got used to them. And now they only make me tired. Now we're talking about 30 some odd years of one or the other. Fondly, Phillipa

Dear Phillipa,

Thank you for sharing you experience.

I have some question relating your statement:

-How long did it last until you were completely tolerant (anxiety) to valium and other benzodiazepines?

-Did you take Klonopin for a longer time (over 6 months) and did you remark tolerance symptoms also?

Kind regards

sdb

sdb, To be perfectly honest everything changed after I went through menopause. When I first started valium 5mg at age 24 it allowed me to function so well that i was able to almost stop them. A bite here or there. And ativan for a while just small doses. I was even able to stop all meds for a while when my life was really stable. Then xanax came out and I took .5 three times a day with beer at night. And after a while I cut down to no beer and .l25xanax nightly. Then I moved and married my current husband and we started to drink pretty heavily beer or wine. And my anxiety started to climb along with my xanax use. Little did I know my thyroid was going. That's when I took higher doses and tried klonopin which at the time made me feel suicidal so back to xanax. Then ativan 5-6mg a day. And my first AD. And they worked well. But now I'm back on valium and the tolerance is there. But also my others xanax, klonopin began to make me just tired and not relaxed so now I take l5mg of valium. l0mg when I go to sleep. And when I awaken during the night another 5mg. And sometimes I wakeup with my legs twitching and feel like I don't want to get out of bed. Fondly, Phillipa

I have been on klonopin for 11 years. It worked well, but I just never had fun and felt depressed. Plus it's been almost impossible for me to get off of. Now I'm tapering down fast from the klonopin and am going up on a new drug called Lyrica. My mood is up and my anxiety down. First time I've tried a drug and feel better right away.

Yes, Lyrica is a newly approved med. Though it's not specifically approved for anxiety, there have been studies showing how affective it is along with anti depressant properties. They are working on approval for GAD at this time. My doctor who is an anxiety expert, drug researcher etc. told me 6 months ago that it was coming out and that it may be my answer to elevate my mood while handling the anxiety. NO anti depressants ever worked and klonopin got me 70% there, but trying to get off it has been just about impossible for me. So far I'm feeling better than ever and I'm just about a week away from being totally off klonopin and just on Lyrica. Only side affects are positive, elevated mood and better sleep. My doc is really "high" on the potential for this med with anxiety disorters. Plus, not being a benzo (thought it works on GABA), the withdrawl problems should be much better. For those looking for a way out of the same old benzo buzz feeling with improved mood, this could be the ticket. Just do a web search on "lyrica and anxiety" and you can get info....
