zyprexa or lamictal ?

Posted by sigolene on September 27, 2005, at 2:58:13

1) I'm bipolar II rapid cycle. I take very small dosage of lamictal (25mg) and 5 mg zyprexa. But I feel extremely irritable and agressive. Do you know which of these two medications can cause that ?

2) If we take only zyprexa for mood control, which dosage should I take ?

I believe zyprexa is an antipsychotic not a mood stabilizer but I could be mistaken. Fondly, Phillipa

Did you just start on these 2 drugs? Both doses are starting dosages. Most people take about 200 mg of Lamictal and 10 mg Zyprexa.

But it's important to start at a low dose of Lamictal (25 mg), then very gradually increase to 200 or so. For Zyprexa, most people start at 5 mg, then go to 10 mg unless they are predisposed to hypotention.

If your doctor allows you to increase the dose of each drug, you might feel better.

Thank you for your answer.
I would like to increase the dosage of lamictal, but I can't because if I increase it, I can't sleep anymore, even with Zyprexa taken before going to bed.
For the small dosage of zyprexa, it's because it's only to stabilize my mood, not for psychotic condition. And I've read somewhere that a smaller dosage is enough for mood stabilizing. Do you agree with that, or do I have a wrong information ?
(sorry for my bad english, my normal langage is swiss.

I take 100 mg Lamictal (my target is 200 in a few weeks) and I can't tell if it would affect my sleep because I take Lunesta each night. So I don't have sleep problems. Maybe you should try that.

As for dosage, a diagnosis really doesn't help very much when deciding what dose to take. It's all trial and error. Everyone is different. Furthermore, a diagnosis is hard to make and oftentimes they are incorrect.

Couldn't help asking you a question. I was in Switzerland twice before I was depressed. And it's the most beautiful country in the world. But my understanding is you can't even live there unless you're very wealthy or i guess born there. Traveled all over Switzerland St. Moritz, Guyere, even took a train to a high mountain where the only transportation was electric cars. It's so clean it's just beautiful. What part of Switzerland are you from? Fondly, Phillipa
