Paxil Poop out

Posted by denise1966 on September 28, 2005, at 4:45:02

Hi,

Well I'm almost sure that the Paxil 40mg which was helping for about 2 years (although not completely but at least I was living again) has pooped out on me completely.

Although it's helping a lot with the anxiety, all I feel like doing is sleeping, smoking and drinking tea.

I'm supposed to be trying to get a job, what do I put under interests on my CV, "enjoys smoking, drinking tea and going to bed"?

Anyway, I need to add something to this Paxil and I'm not sure what to add to get it to work again, or at least give me some motivation. I'm hesitant about stimulants because of tolerance.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance......Denise

desipramine or wellbutrin maybe?
please don't ask for desipramine if you're suicidal though, it doesn't sound like a fun way to die. :(

Denise- I would suggest a stimulant or Wellbutrin. Provigil is the one I take. I like it because one dose lasts all day, and it does not interfere with sleep. Other good ones include Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and Dexedrine (and I think the other one is called Cylert?).

If you take stimulants as directed, and not just for recreational purposes, there is not much of a tolerance problem. You might have to increase the dose over time, but stimulants are considered among the safest drugs in medicine.

If the paxil does poop out on you. Then according to my doc lexapro is next. Especially if you're prone to anxiety. Fondly, Phillipa

Don't mean to jump in, but I went from Paxil to Lexapro and Lexapro made my anxiety so bad I was scared to leave the house!!

Lexapro in my opinion might be a good for depression but horrible and no use for anxiety.

Unfortunately, doctors don't tell their patients much about startup side effects. With Lexapro, anxiety, is often a side effect that shows up at the end of the first week and disappears in the third week.

Scott, thanks for that information as my anxiety is up even from 5mg of lexapro. And I do take that valium at night still. Thanks so much Scott. Fondly, Phillipa

I actually gave Lexapro 12 weeks! Anxiety never faded, avoidance issues worsened.

I think my Lexapro experience actually fuels my desire to give up on other meds to soon. I went through hell for 12 weeks thinking it would get better and it never did.

I think it's wise to give a med a good 4-5 weeks at a theraputic dose and if it doesn't work, stop and move on. I think many doctors keep patients on a med that is NOT working for them to long, dragging out the patients recovery.

Thanks to you all for the advice, I'm still unsure about what my next step will be but I've taken in what you've all said.

Sorry to hear that. That's a long time to have to suffer knowing that the drug is responsible for the worsening. I doubt I would have lasted 12 weeks.

> I think my Lexapro experience actually fuels my desire to give up on other meds to soon.

Yup. I, too, have had too many experiences like yours. The protracted trials of drugs that made me feel worse make me less apt to stick to a drug now. The paradox is, of course, that the fewer and fewer are the drugs that are left to try, the less apt one is to give them full trials. These are exactly the people who need to extend their trials.

> I went through hell for 12 weeks thinking it would get better and it never did.

Yeah. And then you want to blame the doctor for inflicting such pain by forcing you to stay on it.

> I think it's wise to give a med a good 4-5 weeks at a theraputic dose and if it doesn't work, stop and move on.

It is always such a difficult decision to make. There are many stories of people describing their not experiencing an improvement until after 6 weeks. But then we don't know how the drug was titrated in these circumstances. Perhaps the first 4 weeks were at subtherapeutic dosages. I think it makes sense to make some sort of change at 4 weeks if no improvement has been observed. This could be an aggressive titration of the dosage to tolerance, addition of a second drug, or a switch to a different drug.

> I think many doctors keep patients on a med that is NOT working for them to long, dragging out the patients recovery.

20/20 hindsight...

I feel the same way. Got sick of not being able to sleep which was no longer an issue until I went on lexapro. Only took it for 5 days. But enough is enough. I don't want any AD's . Sleep is too important to me. Fondly, Phillipa
