Is it safe to take high dose effexor with Paxil?

Posted by denise1966 on September 23, 2005, at 11:34:08

Hi,

I don't think this Paxil at 60mg is going to work, It's only been 5 days but I just have this horrible feeling that it's not going to work as well as it did 2 years ago (which was never a complete response). I know what a complete response is because I used to get one from Paxil 20mg about 10 years ago, have never felt as good as I did then.

I did try Effexor about 3 years ago but only at a low dose of 150mg and it didn't really help apart from make me feel a bit out of it at times, although it was relaxing.

I was thinking of dropping the Paxil to 40mg (don't want to come off it completely) and asking the psychiatrist if I can add 300mg of Effexor. Or should I try adding high dose Remeron instead? I also tried Remeron years ago and got really bad anxiety on it and a really zombie like feeling but again I only went up to 15mg.

Would either of these combinations be safe?

Thanks.....Denise

maybe you need less.

Just an idea. Don't jump onto so much antidepressant.

Try your zyprexa with say 5mg of paxil. Very often I have had more antidepressant make me feel worse.

Link, you're starting to make me wonder if it's all in my head. No meds seem to do anything to me. Don't give energy remain tired and depressed, and anxious all the time, and borded. Fondly, phillipa

There is an antidepressant dose, beyond which one is going to see little theraputic effect.

Remember that study somebody posted a while back.

It showed that 40mg of prozac was worse than 20mg, and that 5mg was only *slightly* worse than 20mg.

So you could take 20mg and be suffering all sorts of funky side effects, when 5mg would probably do just as well with far fewer side effects.

When AD's did work for me, I found out very quickly that 20mg celexa made me very tired and apathetic, and that 10mg ended up working better.

I just think that 60mg may be overkill, esp since it is the most potent of the SSRI's.

Link, when I took celexa my pdoc said it had no side effects. But I was so tired I couldn't even move. Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks Linkadge,

I only jumped straight onto 60mg because before I stopped the Seroxat the 40mg didn't seem to be working and I found that if I took 60mg now and again I felt slightly better.

However, if I'm still feeling this tired and apathetic tomorrow (all I wanted to do yesterday was sleep) I'm going to drop the dose to 40mg but I still need something to augment it with.

Yes Zyprexa 10mg does usually make me feel a lot better and more motivated the second day after taking it but I want to take something regularly that makes me feel ok so that I won't need the Zyprexa.

Have you tried zoloft before?

There was a time when I was in a strange state, where zoloft was the only one that worked.

It has a dopaminergic effect that makes it slightly more effective for some populations.

THe only SSRI that helped my anhedonia was zoloft. If you havn't tried it, I'd say it might be worth a shot.

Another possability is to lower the paxil and try some wellbutrin.
