I need to get off Dexedrine I'm scared!!! Help!

Posted by ambey006 on September 11, 2005, at 23:26:31

I am trying to get pregnant, and told that I will probably have to get off my meds (Prozac & Dexedrine). I have taken these meds for over 5 years and I am afraid of withdrawing? Any suggestions or experiences?

The standard procedure to going off Dexedrine is tapering. But if you have sitaution that is urgent, you are going to have to adapt for a certain period of time.

What is dose of dexedrine you are on?

I don't know how long you have been taking your 15mg Dexedrine for but....You can quit you 1, 15mg spansule Dexedrine and be OK, just be prepared to adjust to a few days, weeks? of tiredness, less motivation, untill your Dopamine Norepinephrine, neurons readjust. Coffee and patients, and accepting the adjustments will go a LONG way to adjusting without stims, been there done that. Hold on.

Cheers

I'd second the advice and also suggets chocolate to go with eth coffee. Chocolate can really be a poternt mood changer. Vigorous exercise can help too.

Lately, when I drink more than a sip or two of coffee, I get very tired. Before I developed tolerance to Dexedrine, it made me calm and focused. After the tolerance set in, I would get tired from that, too, especially if I took too much.

Sarah,

I was wondering if you read rhappy's post here a little while ago on stimulant tolerance? I was thinking of you when I read it.

Also, I was wondering if you took the higher dosage of dexedrine for very long. Even though it made you more tired, that might change with time. When I first took 5 mg. of selegiline, it make me tired for a few days. Then one day it made me tired as usual but a few hours later I felt stimulation. Maybe the autoreceptors downregulate eventually (after initially being subjected to a larger dosage) and then you'd get the desired response later on. What do you think?

k

Hi Kara,
Thank you so much for pointing this out to me. No, I hadn't seen rhappy's post before now. I have to think about it for a day or so. I'm not sure I agree with rhappy. In fact, what he/she wrote seems to contradict the little I know about these things. I'm awfully wary of taking more Dexedrine than I was on. My doctor always told me to take more. He'd say, "You're on such a low dose. Take more." So, I'd try more, and I'd just flop down in a chair and become almost as much of a zombie as I was on Celexa. In fact, I often thought that Dexedrine and Celexa must deplete dopamine in the same parts of the brain. Of course, Celexa was much worse.

I will reply to you in a day or so. Right now, all I can say is that when I've tried much higher doses of Dexedrine and other stimulants, I am almost immoblized, and I've read elsewhere that that is usually a sign of having taken too much.

I too became a depressed zombie on Celexa-it's such a strongly selective Serotonin drug that it seemed to completly overpower Dopamine.

Strange that you are immoblised on higher doses of Dex, when i first started Ritalin it stimulated me, then calmed me, but now a year and half later, it seems to often make me irritable, not the calm centered person i was, of course it also depends on the outside stimulation i'm subjected to-all very confusing how the Brain responds- back and fourth with it's activity.

Perhaps i'd do better on dex-it has been described as having a less "Caffeinated" fell than Methylphenidate, smoother, or well.

Cheers
