stop prozac/start tofranil?

Posted by john berk on September 14, 2005, at 17:57:24

Hey, hope everyone is doing well!!
i was told to take tofranil along with my now 20mgs. of prozac, slowly increasing tofranil dose!! i am quite leery of this because i heard prozac raises tofranil blood levels considerably!!! could i stop the 20 mgs. of prozac tomorrow, and take 50 mgs. of tofranil, [target dose 150 mgs.] or would i have a discontinuation syndrome with prozac!! does anyone have advice or expierence, my goal is to be ssri free!! thank you....john

Hi John :-)

Are you being treated for OCD?

>my goal is to be ssri free

Why?

Kind regards

hi Ed!!
Thanks for your reply!! i was hoping tofranil would be enough to help my ocd and depression, but i've reconsidered today, and will keep them both unboard. i just found out my friend tapered off luvox, and onto tofranil, and 1 week later is having major obsessions, i guess i was too hasty with that post!!
thanks for your concern Ed....john !

Hi John,

Tofranil isn't normally very effective for OCD. Were you hoping it would help your depression?

>target dose 150 mgs

150mg Tofranil + Prozac could be dangerous. As you know, Prozac can considerably increase the blood level of Tofranil.

In order to safely combine Prozac and Tofranil, the 10mg Tofranil tablets will be necessary. Start out by taking half a 10mg tablet per day.

Kind regards

~Ed

Hi Ed !!
yes, i was hoping tofranil would help my depression, i feel as though prozac has lost it's effectivenes in that regard, but it still helps ocd!! thank you so much for telling me about the prozac/tofranil interaction, i just read up on it, you are so right!!!
my doctor wanted me up to 100 mgs. tofranil by end of the month, while maintaining prozac 20 mgs., i think he may be misguided!! [to say the least!!]
i may just stick with prozac for now, i read that prozac can block tofranils excretion, and give you a blood level 3 times as high, i don't need that for sure!!! thanks again ed for bringing this to my attention...john

Hi,
I took both together in the past.
I kept Prozac at 20 and started Tofranil at 10mg for a few days, then went to 25mg for some weeks I think and it was good because it gave something extra that Prozac could not give : concentration in everything, reading, writing, listening to music, watching tv..etc.
I raised to 50mg and was tolerable, but started to have more increase in appetite and gain some weight so went down.
I think it all depend on peoples chem. but I think that 25-75mg of Tofranil is enough with Prozac 20mg.

Dark Horse.
