Posted by john berk on September 12, 2005, at 12:56:54

Hi!!
i have recently heard a lot of buzz on the ocd-support list i belong to about namenda, FDA approved for alzheimers, having efficacy in ocd treatment!! i am now taking campral and i just read that campral has the same mechanism of action as namenda!!! does anyone have any knowledge of this, or expierence!! i'm taking campral for alcohol abuse, but i am really hoping it will at least make a dent in my ocd!!

thanks to anyone with advice....john

Namenda (memantine) and Campral (acamprosate) act in different ways that ultimately lead to a reduction in glutamate activity:

Namenda - glutamate NMDA receptor antagonist
Campral - glutamate release inhibitor

I don't think it would be justified to consider these two drugs interchangeable. If Campral doesn't help with the OCD, perhaps Namenda will.

Do you think Campral has any positive effect on depression?

Hi scott!!
thank you so much for clarifying both meds actions for me!!!
i really hope that campral does have anti-depressant qualities, i think it may do to these receptors being implicated in alcoholism, and the fact most, if not all alcoholics suffer from depression, many before taking up drinking!!
thanks again, much appreciated....john

Hi John, glad the med is helping you. And that's interesting about the depression being the cause of drinking. I drank a lot and it made me feel great. Now I don't drink at all and maybe that's why my anxiety is so high and i'm depressed. I guess that's the way people teated themselves for anxiety/depression before meds with alchohol. Your friend, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa, yeah, it is odd, but my major depression came on after 6 month's sober, it was really a scary suprise, but i guess alcohol kept my depression at bay until i tryed to stop!!
thanks for your support, i hope you are doing real well, your friend....john
