So let me get this Lamictal stuff straight (help)

Posted by smith562 on August 25, 2005, at 18:31:55

Hey Everyone,

I have been reading all the old posts about lamictal over the past several days. It seems that most people are saying that the initial lamictal antidepressant effect is *not* the true long term mood stablizing effect. That everyone get a strong mood boost in the initial couple of weeks, but that "poops" outs. The true mood stablizing effects occur weeks later.

Am I correct? Is this what everyone here has experienced?

Thanks a million!

Smith

PS Lamictal always poops out on me after 2 weeks I am left back in my severely depressed state

I agree with your observation about the board and Lamictal. I have also heard people refer to it as a wonder drug. I liked the characterization that it is a tease cuz one chases after the effect with dose increases. I've reached a therapeutic dose after a very tedious ramping up period. At 200mg I am very pleased with the result. My fear now is that this is just the "tease" effect. It did bother me a bit though when my pdoc used the simile "I hand it out like candy" and "have not had anyone come down with the RASH." I guess he likes it and I sure like candy.

I have been on it for a long time, and i do remember the initial high that it gave me, but it still works for me. I know this because when I miss a day I get really depressed, then as soon as I take it I feel great again. I think that it works better for depression (in my case) than a typical SSRI.

Seroquel, especially, seems to be a miracle drug.

I have read here about Lamictal pooping out on people, but that has not been my experience. It has been three years at least and I am very pleased. The only problem I had was that initially it took months to reach a theraputic dose. 200mg daily. Good luck. I love Lamictal

How do you take your Lamictal, once in the morning, once at bedtime or twice daily?

I'm still trying to figure out best time to take 200 mg Lactimal Maybe 100 twice a day would work best? I take it first thing in the morning so depressive symptoms don't interfere with my job. But evenings are not so good. I also take 40 mg citalopram (celexa generic) split in two doses. I also wonder if anyone has suggestion on best time of day and how (bid?)to take these two meds. BTW, they are working well for my resistant depression. I also take 50-100 Seroquel for sleep that lasts till morning.

I,too, am wondering if its best to split up the dosage of Lamictal or take it all at one time. I'm fine for most of the day after I take my Lamictal but the evenings are not the best.

Thanks, Karen

I have a super fast metabolism and I dose every two hours. Sounds crazy, I know, but that's what works for me.

Right now I'm at 150 mgs. Going to pdoc tomorrow, and I'll tell him I'd like to titrate up to 200. At least try it.

Lamictal has been great for me. AD's mostly just make me feel horrible. Lamictal has pretty good AD qualities, but I still get a little frazzled, even with the Lam, so I am also taking between 300 and 450 mgs of Lithium.

I add just a little pinch of Serzone at night that I had left over from a long time ago.

Lately, I've felt more normal than I have in a long time. I break the 150's in half then take half of that half, 6 times a day. Today I took Lam at 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, and 6:30.

Nutty, I know, but it'd wear off way too soon if I didn't do it like this.

Hope this helps.
