Has anyone taken antidepressants during pregnancy?

Posted by april8 on August 23, 2005, at 13:35:40

Has anyone taken anti-depressant during pregnancy? If so could you respond to this post? I am currently on Effexor XR and Wellbutrin and may be pregnant. I am going to see the doctor but am concerned because I have severe depression and need meds to function well.

Has anyone taken antidpressants while pregnant? If so I need to hear from you.

I took Paxil during my pregnancy. (Twin pregnancy)
They were both healthy babies. Carried to 36 1/2 weeks. No effect on them. They are almost four now and developing normally. Hope this helps.

Thank you Jenny. Did anyone tell you not to take it? Just curious. I want to at least stay on the Effexor so I dont' have a relapse.
Thanks so much!
April

yes i was on meds for depression through both pregnancies and i too was worried sick. both my boys are healthy and happy. my 10 year old is in all advanced classes and my 9 month old is into everything...i listened to my psy. doc as well as my ob doc b/c i am considered high risk but i did my own research as well and that reassured me more. i hope this helps.

I took prozac while I was pregnant. She is five years old now. She is very healthy.

I think it is more damaging to the baby if you have severe depression during pregancy than if you take meds. I know that prozac is safe.

I dont plan to have another child. But I was freaking out about the med issue... I guess if i ever decided to get preg. I would def. have to stop my mood stabelizers and klonopin. But it would be great to stay on prozac. I think it is more important to be on an AD if needed, instead of having major depression during a pregnancy..

My doctor actually encouraged me to stay on the Paxil. He said I would have a happier pregnancy which is better for both mom and baby(ies). :)
Do check with your doc about the safety of Effexor in pregnancy. I know Paxil was a low level risk medication for pregnancy. If you don't have to switch meds that would be best because we all know how fun switching meds is. :)
I pray you have a safe, happy, and healthy pregnancy and baby.

Your friend,
Jenny

Thank You everyone!

Thank you so much everyone for your feedback. It means alot to me and makes me feel much better. I am going to find out about Effexor. My MD and psych doc both said effexor is okay but wellbutrin isn't. But I will double check everything.
I wonder if anyone breast feed as well. I know it can come through breast milk. I worry about the baby having withdrawals but if you took paxil and it was fine that is similar to effexor in terms of withdrawal.
Best wishes to everyone and thanks so much for writing me.
