Phil -- a question for you.

Posted by Sarah T. on August 13, 2005, at 11:15:16

Hi Phil,

I remember that you were on Citalopram and Adderall a few years ago. If you don't mind my asking, are you still on that regimen? If so, how are you doing? Since you didn't initiate this topic, if you don't want to discuss it, that's OK. I'm asking for several reasons, one of which is that I'm always casting about for information on med combinations. I have a terrible time combining meds, but it's clear that I do need a med combo. Monotherapy just doesn't do it for me. I also had a tough time with Adderall. I seemed to have some problems with its solubility. I've had that problem with a few other meds, too.

I hope you're doing well.

Hi Sarah,

I was on Clonazepam also..still am. I ended up switching to Lexapro from Celexa with pretty good results. Then I 'went south' and had a depression meltdown at work. Had to leave work and go straight to my pdoc, who added Zyprexa to the mix. She wrote a note saying that I needed 2-4 months off of work.
Two days later I switched to mania for 30 days or so...dx changed to BPII. Now on Symbyax, Lamictal, and Clonazepam. The highs are gone but the depression is still a bit of a struggle.
I think my DX of straight depression was wrong from the start. Oh well, what's 20 years to go thru w/ wrong DX?
Anyway..I guess I'm doing okay. Some days, I really miss the stims--I feel too sedated.

How do you know when there's a prob w/ solubility? Have you and your doc discussed other meds?

P

Hi Phil,

Thanks very much for your reply. It's good to hear that you have finally been diagnosed correctly and that, except for the sedation, you're doing OK.

Regarding solubility, well, I'm uncertain what was going on with Adderall. I'm assuming that might have been the problem I had with Adderall; however, I know I had a solubility problem with some other meds because (without getting too graphic here) the meds passed right through me unchanged! Recently, I spoke with a pharmacist about this, and she told me that she knows a man who was taking Procardia (a heart medicine) who had the same problem. He actually "fished" the Procardia pill out of the toilet and brought it into the pharmacy to complain! Perhaps he should have sent it back to Pfizer (I think that's the manufacturer) gift-wrapped.

When I took two 5 mg tablets of Adderall, NOTHING happened, absolutely nothing. It was as if I hadn't taken any medicine. If I took one 10 mg tablet, it kicked in after a while. This makes no sense. I looked up the active and inactive/filler ingredients for Adderall tablets, and they are exactly the same for both tablet strengths. I don't know what's wrong. Maybe I need a tummy transplant.

Anyway, thanks again for your reply. I hope you continue to do well.

Sarah
