can prozac make you more depressed?

Posted by john berk on August 11, 2005, at 21:03:07

Hi everyone,
hope you are all having a good evening, [it's evening here in philadelphia}. i have been taking prozac for 3 years, with pretty decent results, at one point i actually thought i was cured, lol, <groan< but that lasted 3 month's!

but lately when i take my "zac" i feel tired by noon, and them by 4 p.m. i am fairly depressed!! yesterday it was bad, and i decided to skip a dose this morning, and today i felt great, walked 5 miles even!!

i am so scared to be without meds, but i am really worried prozac may be beginning to "backfire" so to speak! i took 1 trytophan capsule about an hour ago, maybe my serotonin has become depleted?? any thoughts or expierences would be much appreciated, thanks...john

This is a simple issue.

You may have too much serotonin and not enough dopamine.

Have you considered Wellbutrin? it is a dopamine reptake inhibitor, instead of Serotonin like Prozac

I take Prozac 20mg.

I have been on Wellbutrin before 450mg XL. But i stopped it becuase i took too much of it and had a sieizure.

Wellbutrin makes things more intresting similar to amphetamine.

thanks matt!! i have been giving that alot of thought!!
i agree with what you said, i may be on serotonin overload, and i actually was thinking about wellbutrin!! i think i do need a dopamine boast, i used to have great energy, [i was a runner] but since prozac, [except the first 3 weeks when it energized me] i have felt lethargic, and now down!! i see my pdoc in 10 days, i'll keep you posted...john

If your're not doing this already, add folic acid and B-12. According to some studies (that I don't have at hand) these vitamins can offset prozac poop-out.

Hi thanks,
i'm headed out today to the health food store, i need more whey protein, [raises tryptophan levels somewhat, great for workouts] and i am definetly going to get the b-12 sublingual tablets, i haven't taken them in quite awhile!! i can't take extra folic acid because i was told it has an negative effect on under-methylated ocd, peeps' like myself!! thanks again jakeman!!

I've read about folic acid being contraindicated for some. I guess I wonder how does one determine that? Is there a way to determine if your're under-methylated? Maybe I'm one of those....

Hi!! it is beleived by some researchers that almost all of ocd patients are under-methylated.
i really don't know the exact science of determining this, but i have corresponded with a natural healer, [she is an M.D.] and she believes undermethylated people respond better to B12, magnesium, sam-e, and zinc!! she feels one way to recognize undermethylazation is whether or not you have a response to prozac, which i did right away. over-methylated people are presumably intolerate of ssri's!! i don't know if her theories are completley sound,[i have read same at another site] but she had ocd, and has found almost complete relief, so i have been trying to folow some of her guidelines!! oh, btw, jakeman, i did get the B12, i do feel added energy, thanks so much for the tip!! peace...john
