Zoloft = acne?

Posted by crazyben on August 9, 2005, at 14:49:51

Hi, I just started Zoloft 3 weeks ago for OCD/depression/Social anxiety.

My problem is, I seem to be getting worse spots / acne, I'm 19 so I'm kinda at that age anyway, but could Zoloft be making it worse?

I am also getting really dry skin on my arms and around my lips.....

Another weird side effect seems to be that I can *feel* sudden sounds that are unexpected. A bit like a shock but not quite.

Is this Zoloft and should I tell my doctor when I see them tomorrow?

Welcome to these boards! :o)

Firstly I'm not as knowledgeable as some of the people here, and I haven't been on zoloft either (but I have tried prozac, effexor, celexa) but I do know that the acne could very well be made worse by the Zoloft. Have you tried using acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide? These are generally good at fighting acne - start with the 2.5% stuff and see how that goes.

The strange feelings you are experiencing are most likely to be related to the zoloft as well. Its a common sensation amongst SSRIs, although usually they occur in the withdrawal phase. I get used to get them really bad on effexor/celexa - its like my brain goes 'whhooosh' if i turn my head, or sometimes your eyes take a while to catch up with your head!! They feel kinda funny don't they! Anyway these 'brain zaps' might be a side effect and disappear once you have been on zoloft a while.

Good luck, and take care!

My son has been on zyprexa for 2 years and zoloft for about 20 months. He never had really horrible acne till he started zoloft but zoloft help eliminate obsessive behavior and he needs that effect. He is 17 yrs. Help us please the acne is terrible.

I have to say I am quite worried about it now.

I was told this morning that Zoloft doesn't cause acne or make it worse, yet lots of online 1st hand reports say it did / does.

I am dark skinned so I don't want darker marks left behind when the pimples / spots have gone.

blah.

hi there,

I tried zoloft for three weeks. Over the course of the three weeks, my skin started getting dry and rashy...by the end of the third week, I had red blotches all over me (not classic HIVES, but more like eczema). I don't have evidence to back this up, but my guess is that it is screwing with the liver. If you really need zoloft and continue to have the acne, ask your doctor to have your liver enzymes checked to look for possible problems.

Also, when we start meds, sometimes we touch our faces more, or change our hygiene habits. Try to be aware of how often you cleanse your skin, whether you have changed soaps, or whether you have developed a craving for a new food that might trigger acne. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes...
