PMS depression/anxiety...

Posted by TrishP on July 20, 2005, at 8:14:29

I think what I'm feeling is depression and anxiety due to PMS. I tried going up on my Wellbutrin, but it made me anxious. I'm down because the Effexor interferes with my personal life. When I feel down and anxious with this PMS, I get short and bitchy with my husband - because I just don't feel happy.

This morning I went back to my 150XL Well and 75mg Effexor. I also threw in 5mg of Buspar. I obviously still feel down - I know it takes time.

I wasn't sure if I should take 50mg of Traz at night - would this help? Or should I take Klonopin or Buspar during the day?

I'm afraid if I take Buspar I can't take Traz for sleep.

I just want to feel happy. Any suggestions? I don't want to up my Effexor, because I'm afraid I'll never want sex again, but maybe I feel bad because I'm not getting enough seretonin. Ugh!

I just want out of this funk.

I think it would be helpful to describe what you are being treated for, what medications you are currently taking and why, and the drugs you have tried in the past.

Actually, I'm being treated for depression and anxiety. I guess the wellbutrin is for the depression and the effexor was added to deal with the anxiety.

In the past I've tried mood stabilizers, which just didn't work out for me. SSRIs make me feel good (acutally like a big, fat, lazy cat), but useless and just not interested in sex.

My depression and anxiety seem to get worse around pms time. If I could just treat the depression and anxiety without all the sexual side effects I would truly be happy.

Zoloft made me hyper and anxious. Prozac made me numb. Celexa made me happy and gain 30 lbs.
I've tried Seroqual at night but I didn't like it because I just couldn't wake up the next day.

My pdoc suggested Risperdal to deal with the bitchy part of pms.

The Effexor is great, but I almost feel like I need more, but I don't want to further complicate the sexual side effects. Does this mean I need more seretonin?

I need an AD to deal with depression & anxiety that won't effect my sex life!

I just don't know.

If you think this is hormone related, have you attempted any alternative treatments? I am not a huge fan of most of the alternative stuff I've tried for other issues and found them ineffective, however, I how found good relief from what I'm using now for perimenopausal symptoms which is basically like PMS on steroids in terms of the REALLY ramped up symptoms.

It might be worth some investigation and research on your part.

I seemed to be less gittery today on the 150XL Well. The 200SR just made me to anxious (which is not a good thing right now).

In addition to the Well 150XL, I took 75mg Effexor and 5mg of Buspar. Is it ok to add Buspar to this mix? Is it too much seizure-inducing meds? I'm also wondering if I can add Traz tonight to sleep?

Are these bad mixes?

I find omega 3 and 6 fish oils helpful - when I'm on these, I really don't get any PMS. Starflower oil and evening primrose oil are good too, but I think this is because they contain the omega oils. The oils are also good for depression etc, although I can't really say that help in my case.

Have you tried searching the alternative board?

Not sure how old you are, but I found myself in a similar situation.
I chalked it up to PMS until the doc mentioned that I might be peri-menopausal. This can start as early as your 30's.
A friend strongly suggested some progesterone cream and it made a HUGE difference. The drive came back somewhat and no more fits of anger.
I still take meds for depression and panic, but always use my progesterone cream.

I'm not trying to thread hijack, but cherylann.....

Could you tell me a bit more about your experiences with the P cream and the brand - OTC or formulary? I would really appreciate it. You can email me at lyco dot com and it's glydin at.

If you don't wish to share I understand, but I am really interested.

Again, sorry for the hijack.

Thanks,
Glydin

Nope, I don't mind sharing at all.

I tried to e-mail, but my computer server is having problems.

The brand of progesterone cream I use is called Life-Flo Progesta-Care. It's all natural pro cream and is recommended by a doc who wrote a book on its benefits. I buy it at the local health food store. I noticed that all 3 stores in my area carry it, so it must be popular. It comes in a pump bottle, so you get just the right amount each time.

I'd also like to mention that my ob said pro cream was a bunch of malarkey and thought it a waste of money. Thankfully, I ignored him.

For me it's been a God send, really. I'm happier, no angry outburts or crying at totally stupid things. Good stuff.
