cutting :(

Posted by alienatari on July 7, 2005, at 5:02:59

I feel really depressed again all of a suden. I dont know why my moods are so up and down. I feel like cutting so badly. But i didnt. I wont.
I took some valium and will take my normal dose later, but I dont think valium does anything for me anymore :( Are there any other long-acting benzo's that are a bit stronger than valium? Ones that are not as addictive as xanax and ativan? (my pdoc wont perscribe them).

I upped my Clomipramine to 200mg per day, which is what my doctor wanted. I hope it helps.

I gave the razor blades to my mother to throw out. She is upset that I had them but glad they are gone :(

sorry
take care all

Chris

Try adding some ginger root to your regiment. I read a study (I will try to find it) that showed that ginger root (standardized) was helpful as an adjunctive to meds in cutting/self-harm.

I have no advice for you at the moment, but I wanted to tell you how brave, positive, and constructive you are to have resisted what must be an intense urge to cut and discard all of your blades. You deserve to feel better. I don't doubt that you will succeed.

You don't have to say "sorry". Not here. Even if you cut tomorrow, no one will think any less of you. You would not be a failure.

Are you BPD?

Good for you for having the strength not to cut Chris, and for giving your mom your blades. Hang in there. BTW, I take Xanax as needed, and don't find it addicting. I only take .25 mg as needed though.

Chris I'm so sorry you felt like cutting again. But I agree you did the right thing in resisting the urge. Have you called your pdoc? Fondly, Phillipa

Wow. I'm impressed. I know how hard it is to control an urge like that. It was really strong of you to give up your razor blades. You've made a big step forward. Keep going. And no need to apologize. It's not your fault and it's not something you just chose to have to deal with.

Hi Chris,

I'm sorry you feel so down. But, good for you for resisting the urge to cut. I wanted to follow up on something Scott said. I'm wondering if you have elements of BPD because of the whole cutting and mood swing thing. If so (and you may have come across this already) you may want to check out the following site by a doctor who specializes in BPD:
http://www.biologicalunhappiness.com/HowBPD-Y.htm

He suggests Prozac as the base drug, although Clomipramine may play that role for you. He finds that adding Tegretol to Prozac works wonders for the dysphoria and dissociation that can lead to cutting. I don't know if you've tried Tegretol, but it might be an option worth considering given your troubles with APs.

HTH,

Chris

That was very strong to resist the urge to cut. I was recently diagnoses with BPD and you really should check it out. I'm on Paxil and Seroquel, but still don't have the strength to not self injure. I have been reading as much as I can find on line about BPD and SI and have seen several people claim that people with BPD or PB should avoid benzos because they can make the symptoms worse (has anyone else read that?) Be careful, stay safe.

Hi Panz.

No, but it makes a lot of sense. One of the hallmarks of BPD is poor impulse control. BZDs are disinhibitory, so they would make it that much harder to control impulses.

I don't know what you have read so far, but it seems to me that either Tegretol or Trileptal in combination with Zyprexa works well to treat BPD, especially if these medications are combined with psychotherapy geared to treat BPD (dialectic behavior therapy, for instance).
